Has anyone got any first hand experience with the 40 S&W on hogs? If so what commercially loaded round is the most suitable for use on hogs at distances probably under 50 yds.

    Personally,

I feel, although I have not experienced it, that a .40 S@W is just too underpowered for a mature hog at any reasonable distance.

However, this is a forum so I expect you will get other opinion.

When my son bought his first Glock it was in 40 Smith & Wesson.
He and I went out and shot about 100 rounds through it.
Right off the 40 S&W seemed like a very HOT round.
We shot ever thing we could find to shoot and I for one beleive it's an excellent cartridge.
If I were to Hog hunt with a pistol in 40 S&W I would keep my shot's withen 20 yards.
If I were treed by a pissed hog and shot it at close range I beleive the 40 S&W would hammer the Hog grave yard dead !!!

BUT if I were going Hog hunting I would prefer a rifle because you need a cartridge to smash up the shoulders and put the Pig on the ground.

The 40 S&W would be a last resort, though I said what I said above it would be better to take out human life than a wild Hog...A.H

I going down on the Mexican border area near Eagle Pass, Tx. at Thanksgiving to hopefully try my new 270 Vanguard on a deer, but am also considering taking a feral hog with that 40. Just wondering.

    hog hunting with handguns

I am posting this to the guy wanting to know if a 40 call S&W is enough gun. my answer is "NO".. I have hunting hogs plenty and takin' more than my share. Over Bait and behind dogs. I have witnessed hogs shot with 243's, 22-250's,300 mags,270 short mags and the like. Bows are very effective within 25yrds from a stand. You can kill a hog with a knife when using dogs. But to actually hunt a free range hog with a 40cal handgun is in no way the right thing to do. I have a video of a hunt we did in Texas with dogs.Showing both kills with a knife and a 44 mag handgun. Once you have the dogs detain a hog they are like a wheelbarrell . you get hold of the hind legs and they cannot turn around to get you. But if they are free you are in real trouble. The action on video is great. guy sitting on the hog in water with a knife. Another scene though shows a hog that slipped the dogs and came running at a friend with a 44mag. The hog was shot point blank in the back of the head as my friend was jumping out of the way. The hog ran another 20yrds or so with dogs on his legs before we could get another shot into it. Scary to say the least.I have also witnessed bullets bounce right off a hog within 15 yrds from a 45acp from a tree stand. So please do yourself a big favor. get a real gun to hunt hogs..Have at it, but be safe

To put it bluntly, the .40 just isn't enough gun, all of my hog hunting with a handgun will be done using a .44 Mag, hot loaded .45 Colt, or .454 Casull

Plus, I don't think any .40 S&W loads have a bullet that can do the job.

I hunted hogs for in Fla for many years using dogs...both with guns and without,(usually without). I can tell you without any doubt that a 40 S&W is way underpowered for hogs. At the very least Id go with a 357 mag, although I prefer a 41 mag personally.
