I have notice recently that some AR makers are having kits and upper receivers made in 5.45x39. Does anyone have one? If you do, are they accurate? Reliable? thinking about getting an upper for the AR in this caliber due to low ammo price. Or should I just get an AK? Opinions, I know you have them, let's hear them.

I dont have one but I see a lot of issues out there on the internet with both AK calibers in an AR platform.

Not sure I'd want to run the corrosive stuff in an AR and I don't think the non corrosive ammo is a whole lot cheaper than 5.45/.223. Personally I'd get the AK.

I think the idea is great. However, ammo is getting harder to find for good prices. It's about to the point that steel cased .223 is the same price as what you can find 5.45x39. With the cost difference to shoot quickly becoming negligible, I'd just as soon stick with 5.56.

    I'm seeing surplus corrosive 5.45 for $130-$140 per 1080 and new Bear/Wolf 223 for $100-$110 per 500.

I haven't seen surplus for that price on a while. Is this online or local? Locally we can't get ANY 5.45 so online is the only way to go and that involves shipping so it ends up being pretty much the same as I can pick it up local at PSA. Also, it's a pain to clean your gas tube and you'll have to do that EVERY time you fire corrosive so you're adding a lot of maintenance.

I don't get where all of you think OI need to clean your gas tube so much after shooting corrosive ammo.. I have a 5.45 AR that has over 3k rounds threw her and I have never scrubbed the gas tube. I had to take the gun apart to put a FF HG on it and I examined the gas tube there was 0 rust in it and very little carbon. So all of you saying they suck do to having to clean the gas tube are full of BS they are high grade stainless and will not rot out from the primers being corrosive.

I completely agree with you. IF every surplus 5.45 only has corrosive primers. They aren't all like that. Some actually DO have corrosive POWDER. That WILL corrode the gas tube, gas port, bolt carrier group, bore, and chamber if you don't clean it.

I saw these guys at a gunshow the other day - Ammunition - Featured Items - Military Shooters LLC

Then there is AIMsurplus - http://www.aimsurplus.com/catalog.aspx?groupid=33&name=5.45x39

I know I can get these cans locally but I don't know the price.
