even the moderate recoil of a mosin will kill alot of cheaper scopes. i would up your scope budget a little .

Check out Vortex Crossfire and Sightron SI scopes. They are around the $120 price but they have a lifetime warranty, which makes the extra price worth it.

A Nikon 3-9x40 Prostaff, several reticals to choose from, great light gathering qualities. You can find them on eBay and gunbroker for around $130-150.
Its a very good scope for the money.

All I gotta say is that usually you get what you pay for, especially when it comes to optics.

No testing this weekend, have to make mount parts. A 50mm scope is rather large in diameter for a side mount. A 40mm or less will give you a much better cheekweld as the larger the bells the further away from the rifle the scope has to be to avoid rifle contact. Keep in mind that an average 40mm scope is generally around 47-48mm in overall diameter, 40mm is only the lens size. Happy scope shopping. :)

I had a Barska, never will go that route ever again, they cant take too much recoil, the lenses loosen up.

IMO, I like the look of the older Weaver, Lyman, Redfields on the MN. You can find a used one for the price you are looking for, and although they may not be as bright as a new Nikon, they are still very good. Also they usually have 40mm bells or less.
