Bohemian there are feral hogs in the Virgin River Valley from AZ all the way down to Moapa. I have been a few times without any success but I know a couple of guys that have shot a few. I have recently heard there is an outfitter/guide up in the area but I don't have any contact info. You could check with some of the locals in Mesquite and Glendale and see if they have anymore information.

Now I'm curious. I haven't been hunting for years. Need to practice a bit more, get a longer, rifled barrel for my Mossberg, that sort of thing. If I start up again I want to be sure I'll get it right, after all.

I emailed NDOW after checking the site and not finding anything, either. Hopefully they'll reply sometime today and I'll post it here.

Everything I have heard about it from several people is the same story. Guy up in Mesquite had an Exotic animal hunting ranch that he catered to the wealthy gamblers in Vegas back in the late 70's mid 80's. When the dam broke up in St George in the mid 80's it flooded St George, Mesquite, Glendale pretty much anything along the Virgin River. Well it destroyed this man ranch and the animals escaped the floods and have been roaming the virgin river valley ever since.

Here is an old Pahrump news paper that has a short sentence about them being in the Virgin River valley so I guess they are there.

Here is something I found off of google about them as well.

    I have a response:

    Subject: Feral Hogs

Feral hogs are under the jurisdiction of the Nevada Department of Agriculture. They are not considered wildlife per se. They are classified as feral (wild) and estray (released from captivity); therefore they are under the authority of the Brand Inspectors.

That's why they're not listed on the NDOW site. I just sent an email to the Dept. of Agriculture. So we should have an answer shortly.

Good work Coe. Since we're on the subject what is a good caliber for hunting hogs? And when are we getting a G&G hog hunting trip together?

well I have been up in that area looking for the piggies on more than one occasion. The brush is very dense so shots are not more than say 50 yards in most cases. There are areas there that you can over look the river where you could have longer distance shots but for the most part it it pretty heavy brush.
I have taken my 10mm, my .45 Colt, my Grendel, and I even brought my 870 with slugs. The one guy I do know that has shot two of them there said he used a 30-30 for both of them. He said one weighed in around 250lbs and the other was 180 - 200 range.
Billy the pistol is ideal for that terrain. If you look up Mesquite Nevada on google earth and zoom in on the river you will see the terrain.

Capt I am seriously considering going this next weekend. I want to go again before it gets to hot.

Edward, the Nevada Department of Agriculture does not authorize the hunting of feral pigs.

Interesting. I wonder how these guide services are operating up there in Mesquite then if it's not legal. I am going to have to look into this further.

That is odd. I wonder if they operate on private property.

That could be the loophole. If they show on private property they're a nuisance animal, right? Thus subject to the property owner's legal right to have a dangerous animal on their property killed.

We'll need to ask those services for sure, Palladin8.

That was my thinking. Anyone know how much these guide services charge?

I haven't found any names of outfitters around the area. Ofcourse I really didn't spend a great deal of time looking because I just don't have the extra cash floating around for a guided hunt right now. If they are like most other outfitters I would imagine you would be looking around $500.00. That seems to be the going rate for guided hog hunts in California and other states. I might do a little more looking around though and see what info I can find out. Who knows they may be hurting like everyone else due to the economy.

$500 is definitely too rich for my blood. Oh well.

    Hog hunting in Nevada

I was in Caliente, NV this passed weekend (4/8-9/09) and I got to talk to a handfull of the town people who know a bit about the Hogs.....inculding the man who sold me my "Hunting license". I bought it just case! What everyone says now....is you can use any weapon, hunt any time and use any method (night lights). Everyone seems to welcome us to come up and get rid of these hogs/pigs. I have been invited to hunt there any time I like. Now to make the time.

I bought my hunting license just in case we run across a BLM or Fish and Game, I just won't to out there hunting/shooting and run into any trouble.

I think we all have to check with the local laws in each county and double check before we go hunting. I'm doing my homework now.....I plan to lead a small group of hunting friends and see what out there....I did see a lot of damage these hogs do! Big deep tracks, big hogs are out there.

Good advise, hunt with someone who is going to watch your back while you field dress one of these hogs.

    Good luck
    Capt Hook

welcome to Gun & Game Capt Hook. I have never heard of wild boar being up there in the Caliente area, but then again it wasn't until last year that I found out about the wild boar up in the Mesquite area. Let us know how it turns out for you.

well if anybody finds out who to hook up with to hunt the feral hogs up mesquite way or thereabouts, i would not mind teaming up, sharing the expenses to that end. sounds like it would be a good weekend trip.

When things cool down I think I will plan a trip regardless of what the Dept of Agriculture says. I have talked to way to many people now about this and they have all said they have hunted them and don't need a license. Maybe will just have to go across the border into AZ and hunt them there.
