I had an article a while back that had some good recipes, but misplaced it. I cannot remember what the old load was that I used and most manuals are faster than the recommended ,below 1600 fps. I have 170gr. Oregon trail bullets gas checked and seems like the old load would keep about a 2" group at 50 yrds or so. I appreciate any suggestions.

the 30-30 is one that will run cast as fast as jacketed.
i have used h-414,3031,4895, and currently use aa-2230.
but all these loads are over 2100 fps so not much help for you.
    try 10 grs unique.

Thanks. I was also considering something like a 4198 or 4227. Let you know tomorrow how it works.

Only one I have is 16.7 grains of 2400, 170 grain bullet, which runs at about 1800 fps. But that was with using copper gas checks.

    Thanks for the help.
I cut open an old load that I crushed the case mouth on to find 16 grs. of RL-7. Great small game load for iron sights.

Do you not keep records of your reloading or mark the boxes with the load data?

Guilty as charged. I didn't always follow good practices 10 years ago. I am still finding better ways to keep such data. I now write the load and manual it's from on small batch test loads right on the cartridge. On larger batches I just write it on the ones in front and it all goes in the notebook.

There are plenty of cast 30-30 loads on the net. Do you remember who the article was written by, Taffin, Kelly, Junior Doughty?

I out a few cast loads through the old Wi. 30-30 yesterday. My first load was 8 grs. of IMR SR-4756 behind a Lee 170 gr. RNFP with no gas check double tumble lubes runs just a little over 1150 fps. on the chrono,no leading very accurate and no recoil.

The second load was 28 grs. of H-335 same bullet double lubed with a GC velocity runs just a little over 2000 fps. average same accuracy with a bit more felt recoil. makes a excellent deer hunting load.

Thanks for all the help, that's alot of data. I am thinking my old loads were from Rifle or Handloader mag but can't be certain. It was Marlin only data and could be 8 to 10 years old, perhaps even anoyher mag.
Rain blew out the berm so range time was short to due to repair.I tried 3 loads today though and one was great. These were fired iron sights at 50 yrds standing w/ shooting sticks.
    18 grs. IMR 4198 w/ OT 170gr GC ( 1-5 shot grp. @ 1 1/8")
    16.5 grs. IMR 4227 " " " " ( 1- 5 shot grp. @ 1 3/4")
    10 grs Unique " " " " ( 1- 5 shot grp. @ 2 7/8")
I will testing out the 4198 more soon along with the recipes you guys gave me. I look forward to checking those links as well.
