Hello, I bought this Arisaka at a gun show for $80.00. The seller did not have much info for me other than it was a Japanese WWII rifle. It had a nice barrel and muzzle so I bought it for the price. Is there anyone who can give me info on it? I would like to know:
    What caliber it shoots?
When (Year) and where it was made (Arsenal)?
Was it a good price for it?
Any help is greatly appreciated - here are the phots.

What is the length of the barrel? From the end of the barrel to the cut out on the reciever nearest the barrel.

Also any way you can post a pic of the rear barrel band? And does your rear sight have little wings on it that fold out? What is the condition of the bore? Is it shiney or pitted or dull or black? All these affect the price of your rifle.

The length of the barrel from tip to receiver (where the sight is) is 20". The bore is shiney and black - I tried to take pic but it didnt come out too good. The rear sight had wings but they were taken off. I enclosed some other photos. The bolt is in good shape except the some of the blueing has worn off. There is no rust (you will see a discoloration in the chamber at the end of the barrel but it is not rust).
Thanks for any help - Mark

It appears you have a 6.5mm Arisaka Type 38 Infantry rifle.
    It chambers 6.5 Jap.
    This is 6.5x50SR Semi-Rimmed.
This is the long Type 38 Rifle. Not the carbine.
It has refinished wood which severely lowers the collector value.
The Mum is ground off which is not unusual.
These rifles are worth more with the mum intact.
You are missing the cleaning rod which is about $25 for a repro.
Your rifle has very good metal which is refinished as well.
With original finish it would be in the $150 to $199 range.
Refinshed your $80 is about right.
A nice rifle non the less.
These are one of the strongest actions made.

Also, how can you tell Type 38 from Type 99 and the type of ammo they take?

Does it have any writing on it? The arsenal marks look like three circles or a figure eight upside down in a circle or something that looks like trhee circles.
I have to admit there are not a lot of differences in a 38 long rifle and a 99 long rifle. The main difference is the 99 usually has a mono pod that is pinned to the lower barrel band. The 99 usually has a stockier or fatter stock.

It is marked as follows: [IMG] 82934[IMG] Then there is a mark that I can not make out (obviously japanese writing/lettering).

The three circles and the circle with the two dashes on either side I believe indicate the Toyo Kogyo arsinal. The backwards C I believe indicate series number 33. I dont know what this info means with regard to what year it was made.
