For you all who reload the 7.62x54r, what types of powder, charges, and bullets do you use? I would like to start reloading for my own Mosin.

Well, I was using Sierra 150 grain SP's for a .303 Brit since they were sized at .312". But I found a deal and got about 1000 pulled 147 grain FMJBT's that were sized at .311". I load them up with about 48 grains of H4895 for both of them. All my Mosins seem to like them.

A lot of people seem to like to use .308" bullets, but all of my Mosins have been slugged and all my bores are bigger than that. So I would expect decreased velocity and accuracy if I used them.

Definitely slug your bore to see what size projectiles you will want to pick up to load for your Mosin.

My "go-to" load in most of my M\N's consists of 49-49.5 gr. of H4895 in Grafs\Prvi\Wolf Gold cases over Win lrg rifle primers. My bullet of choice is the .312 Hornady 150 gr. SP.
This load is devastating on deer and hogs. I shot a coyote a couple of yrs. ago with this load @ 80 yds. and it took a 6" "canoe" out of his back. This same load took three neck vertebrae out of a nice doe @ 175 yds last season out of an M-44, FWIW, this is a "Max" load and should be worked up to from a starting point of around 45 gr.

i use the same load and bullet as gandog. mine like it. i need to find the exact charge that makes each mosin happy, but it's miles above surplus ammo and as good as $20 a box winchester.

Best two so far are 174 grain Sierra Match King with 49 grains of Accurate 4350 powder, or the 180 grain Sierra Pro Hunter with 49 grains of Accurate 4350 power. Both of those are .311 (7.7mm Japanese / 303 Brit) rounds. Midway carries them as well.

I've tried .312 Woodleighs, but didn't have much luck with them. Also have some .311 150 grain Speer Hot Cor loaded up for the next trip out. We'll see how those shoot.

I use 45.5 grains of Varget behind both Sierra's 168-gr MatchKing and Nosles's 180-gr Ballistic Tip.

Works well for me. Oh yea, their .308 diameter bullets cuz mines that small(context).

.308 Hornady 150gr BTFMJ. IMR4895 powder. Winchester or Lapua brass (that is what I got but I will use others if I have it). CCI 200 Large rifle primers.

Be sure to slug your bore first as the .308 may not work as well as a .311 bullet. I am able to shoot a 0.8" group at 50yds using 44.2g of IMR4895 in the winchester brass with the CCI primers and the 150gr bullets.

Hornady 150 grain soft point .312 dia bullet.
    Prvi brass.
    Federal #210 large rifle primers.
IMR-3031 powder 44.4 grains. That is a max load the starting load is 38.4 grains.

This is actually the load for my PSL but the Mosins I have shoot it well also.

Thanks for all the recipes! I am going to go get my barrel slugged and then start testing different loads. I do like a lot of the ones here I'm most likely going to try them all out lol

I used this tutorial before ordering bullets and it worked great. My bore is .313 with no loose areas.I'm still waiting for my hornady .312 bullets but can say for sure bullet dia. is critical to accuracy in my 91/30.I took 3 boxes of bullets to the range while waiting.Wolf gold .310 100 yrds 10"group.Winchester .3105 5"group.Hotshot .311 3" group i know there can be MANY other factors involved in these results but really think .312 bullets and tinkering with my loading will be very fun and shrink that group. I really wish i could send thumbnails but nobody at my house has the patience to teach Dad how.But i'll learn somehow.

Where would you suggest to get brass for reloading? I have 20 from a box of Winchester i got at gander mountain. I am looking to buy a bag of bulk empty brass to reload. Anyone have good sources for good brass?

Grafs and sons is where I get all my brass and bullets if midway doesn't have any of it. Natchez shooters supply usually has bullets when others dont.

Heh heh, I just got Tex 50 cases and bullets for 7.62X54R. He has the powder and primers. Maybe he will finally roll some of his own.

Graf and Sons also gives discounts to C&R license holders. Though Midway does, too.

If you can't find brass easily, AimSurplus still has a lot of that reloadable Prvi Partizan. Pretty good ammo anyway, and so far the brass has held up to 4 reloads with no problems.
