COULDN'T FIND A THREAD WITH IMPROVISED GEAR...SOOOO
HEAR's TO *******, Homade, gear and assesories for hunting, shooting ect. (Actually just wanted to show off some stuff my son and I created together.)Maybee you have some cool improvised gear to show also.
I have been using PVC to make target stands for the last 15 years. I found they were less expensive, and faster to make than wood framed ones. The only major drawback is that they don't work so well on windy days.
PS. THE DISASSEMBLY AND REASSEMBLY issue was important to me as my only current reliable vehicle is a Malibu, and If I want to shoot more than 25 yards I have some driving to do. Plus, my uncle wont let me drive a 4 wheeler on his place,(trouble with kids before). And 200 yards is Quite a carry when I need to practice with my longer range stuff.
Was thinking about putting up some election yard signs. At 50 and 100 yards along the way.Where the grass, etc., is short enough to see them. I like nascar ladies idea about staking them down since I already carry para-cord and tent stakes in my car.
I'll see how well they work this weekend.
Sooo enough about me. Anyone else got a contraption they would like to post. Looking foward to seeing some home made, *******, hunting- shooting-outdoor sports stuff.
My son bought two 8" AR500 round targets and asked me to weld up a stand using 1/2 rebar and two large 3/4" dia steel nuts to weld up the legs. Center bar slides though the hole in the nut. Bought a couple of feet of conveyor belt and some Grade 8 bolts and nuts. The photo was off the internet to give you an idea but what we made looks very similar. Works great for .308 down to .22 cal
Quickey shotgun plug. CUT A PIECE OFF A PLASTIC COAT HANGER. LOAD UP YOUR TUBE WITH THE DESIRED SHELLS. TAKE END CAP OFF TUBE.
STICK CUT PIECE DOWN IN HOLE IN RETAINER TILL IT STOPS. Mark and cut off extra +1/4". Smooth up And deber homemade plug. Reinsert and put cap back on.
You just made a non moisture drawing replacement plug custom made for the amount and type of shells you use and it didn't cost $8!!!

Here is a photo of a skinning knife I made one evening. It started life as an old worn out table saw blade that had been sitting on my work bench in the garage for a while. I had an old piece of oak trim in the wood rack for the handle. Total out of pocket cost was $3.00 for the two brass Chicago screws.
Just for kicks got measured for length of pull the other day at a clinic. With shooting vest on it's 14.25inches. My 20 guage 870's length of pull is 12.75 inch.
Priced several options and most cost more then I had in the trade when I got the gun, or required finish work.
Was looking at a piece of white oak I bought for a long gone project. It is 5/8" thick. Started measuring things around the house and my wife's spsre cutting board is 1/4".So time to make home made L O P spacers. WILL post finished results.
Here is what i,'ve done so far.
For those with PVC target stands - if the wind is blowing hard, you will probably like using sand bag - one on each side. Or a scrap piece of 2x8 that is wide enough to span the two sides and you stack rocks on it. The trick is to pack the wooden stakes in the PVC so the wind can't rattle and impact the stake against the PVC pipe. They stay up better that way.
When it is just breezy but not too bad, fill the PVC with water.
I should probably kick myself in the butt and take pictures of the stuff I've made. I just never think to because the plans are already in my head.
This season, I made up 5 "flagger" targets for our club. Two "A" frames with a rod between them. A 1/2 scale, AR400 steel USPSA type target hangs on a flat bar between them. Two 1/4" steel rods protrude at the top of the bar, front side and back with thin foam board flags. Front one is black and back one is orange. You shoot the steel, the bar swings, and the orange flag bobs up and down. All made to break down and stow easily. These worked great so far for 2 3-gun matches - you know if you hit the target. Only problem was that they were left out for use on the 400 yard range and some Gibroni's decided the foam boards should also be targets. But the apparatus took a kickin' and kept on tickin".
3 years ago, I built a propeller rack (PC term for Polish plate rack). Piece of HSS 6x6x1/4 (square tube) with bearings that fit a 1-1/4" pipe shaft; Angle post and angled feet. Looks like a mail box until the shaft is inserted into the bearings. Shaft goes to the angle iron "propeller bar" which holds 8 plates. Shoot one off and the rack starts swinging.
Duelling trees with a different design. Probably should have patented it because I see it is being copied a lot now.
Swinger targets. Pepper poppers that act as a trigger to activate swingers, or anything else. Drop-turn targets.
Steel challenge target plates shaped and painted to look like road signs. (You know, to legally satisfy the urge to prove you can shoot better groups than the Saturday night drunks do along the back roads.)
Next year I will build some "over easy" targets. A stand with a swinging bar, large plate on the bottom and smaller on top. Shoot the plates and make one revolution over the top.
All stuff you folks have seen on youtube but fun nonetheless.
Ok, finaly got the spacers done. Not exactly kosher but will let me try out that length of pull and the drop (I changed it a little too).Cost my $2 to replace my wife's cutting board and 50 cent for 2 3 inch long screws. So $2.50 and 2hrs.
A fella at the gun show this weekend was showing a simple little thing he invented that could be added to pretty much any T-6-style stock to turn a gun it into a bump fire. You could buy the part for $20 or you could buy the plans for $10.
It was only a piece of plastic and a few pieces of metal.
Not my thing, but if you needed to improvise a crappy, not-dependable, version of FA you could do it for cheap.
Got the 20 guage where I'm happy with it. Added a cheap elastic shell holder and cut up a soft pistol case to make a cheek rest. With the new sights it shoots with pumkin on a post sight picture with shot at 10 to 30 yard and shoots straight across sight pic for slugs at 50 yards about 3 inch low at 100 yards .Think It's a keeper.
Here's a holster I made about 30+ years ago for a Colt 1851 Navy clone. It's heavy leather for the old industrial machinery drive belts. My shooting friend says that the pistol is "rusty"; I tell him it's well-aged patina!
I work in the Quality department of a large steel fabrication company. This is a target frame and steel gong that I had fabricated, for our small, local sportsmans' club, placed at the 200 yard line. The frame is 2X4 inch bar stock, 2 feet wide. It is designed to absorb, and survive,
random stray shots. The gong is 18"X24", made from 5/8" steel plate. The previous gong was the same dimensions, but 1/2" thick. One round had partially penetrated it because it had impacted in a previous impact crater. You know when you've hit it, as it has a very satisfying ring.

My son wants a bullet trap so he can set up a small sight-in range on his property for .223 up to .308 Win. I've got 2" angle iron (3/16" thickness) and welder and thinking two 1/2" steel plates 18"x24" set at a 45 - 60 degree angle (not sure which) to deflect bullet down into sand trap. Each plate would weigh about 61 pounds. Any of you have some recommendations or thoughts for this project?
