Since pulling the trigger would probably be the last thing you ever did before getting torn apart.
The biggest freakin bullet with all the powder I can cram in the case is the order of the day

weight and length= penetration.

I have gone as high as 350grs in the 445 but prefer the lighter 300-315 area, they are easier to deal with, a bit more accurate, and don't suck up near as much case capacity.
when you start filling a case with 31-2 grs of 1680 your getting into rifle type loads.
a follow up shot or two is probably gonna come in pretty handy and the super heavy bullets tend to hamper that.

It sounds like this bear was a problem for a while. If the shot using bird shot would have done the cut slug method that could have ended the problem. But I do agree that the shot location is vital in bringing down one of these beasts. The .45 acp slug was probably shot from a distance is why it didn't do more damage, I'm fairly sure it did run the bear off, probably why it didn't get reported & there is no info on the bear being shot.
