Jaidyn and I came down to the farm for the 2nd shotgun deer season. After warming up the camper, fixing dinner and teaching her how to play solitaire, we got to bed early. Up at 5am, quick snack and coffee, we were in our blind on the west 80 by 6am. High winds and cold temps sought to dampen our spirits until a huge body 8 point buck came out of the woods in front of us. Jaidyn tried to get in position but it was awkward with two people in the blind. She made the shot but missed. The buck just walked back in to the woods, evidently not too scared. We came out, saw no blood and headed back to the camper.
I fixed sausage gravy/biscuits for breakfast and we are back out in another blind on another section. My turn. We will go back to the first blind this afternoon and sit until dark. The wind should die down later today.

That's awesome!
I love to see kids getting the chance to get out doors and enjoy hunting with their parents. It makes me think about those good times when mine were that age. My 20 year old daughter called me from college last week and asked if she could come home to hunt.
GOOD LUCK, and shoot straight.

Sat on the west 80 this afternoon. Had 3 doe come through at 40yds then another single doe come by at 20ft. It was working the wind but couldn’t smell us. We passed, hoping for the buck again. At least the wind died down. We drove to a neighboring town for dinner after the hunt, opting for real food instead of microwaveable stuff.
Ready for bed and another early start. If things don’t pick up, Jaidyn’s going to miss school on Monday.

Hunted early this morning but saw nothing but rabbits. Packed up and headed home so Jaidyn could get ready for school tomorrow. This afternoon while out north hunting, my buddy Jim calls me from the farm. His neighbor found a dead buck just 50 yards inside his fence and thought Jim should know. Jim told him a little 9 year old girl shot that buck but did not find it.
Our son and I drove down and retrieved Jaidyn’s buck.

Hunting again. Had 4 deer in front of the blind early today until the 45 mph wind gusts took the pop up blind I was sitting in and lifted it up so the deer could see me. They ran, I laughed, then drove to town and got some real tent stakes. Not going anywhere now.
Help cut wood, split and stack it for the farmer during my down time. Told him he isn’t charging enough for the red elm firewood.
Back at it in the morning.

Had some deer in front of me this morning already but not light enough to shoot. By the time I could see, they were walking in to the woods, leaving me a Missouri bullseye shot. Passed on that. More will come. No wind today and 20 some degrees makes for a good day for deer hunting. Farmer had a hen die and wanted to know if I want it to lure in the bobcat. I’ll hang it later where the cat has been seen. Maybe I can catch him while I’m here.

Had a fork horn come by tonight. Let it walk. Gave up my honey hole to the landowners cousin as he came down to hunt and hadn’t seen anything. He missed! Charlie had 3 doe and a buck come by him at last light. He fired 4 shots but we couldn’t find blood. I’ll look in the morning after the hunt. He uses a 20ga and they don’t have much luck on Iowa deer.
I cooked baked potatoes and rib eyes on the camp fire tonight for dinner. Keith and Jim ground meat and made sausage in the barn tonight as well. I’m gonna hit the sack now as 5am comes early. Heading home after the morning hunt to see my girls. Miss them a lot.
