That Bonnie and Clyde article got me to thinking. Got another 'what if...' for ya'll.

Let's say you fell into a number of 30-06 rounds. A couple of thousand or so. Let's also say you were in the market for a reasonably priced, very dependable semi-auto -06 rifle. Something you could depend on (if you found yourself in a firefight) to go band every time and to throw the lead out there for you ASAP.

Now I'm a fan of some of the older stuff, but not so much the Garand (no, I don't know why...never have been). What other options would someone have in the semi-auto 30-06 class? Let's say for my non-sensical reasoning, that it has to be pre-1999.

Yes, I do know my requirements are vague. Let's say under $1500 for poops and chuckles.

Thought about that, but they are not designed for lots of ammo in a short period of time (ammo dumbs...if you will). And didn't they have feed issues with the -06?

This was my father's final deer hunting rifle. Dad had a Leupold Gold Ring scope and put the rifle to wonderful use. (No feed issues that I can recall).
Since dad was a member of the Navy Rifle Team, he would have "done his homework" and had a gunsmith correct the problem.

My father bought his in the early 1960s. I can't speak for later models.

If you need to use 30/06 for rapid "mag dump" defense, you might be better served with a weighty rifle, like the Garand. I would use a 30/06 as a concentrated aimed fire weapon to hold off aggressors at more than a few hundred yards, in which case I would be happy with a bolt gun. I would rather have your scenario consisting of 308W rounds, then go for a SA M1A for semi-auto "havoc in a hurry" (that phrase just cracks me up!), or concentrated accurate fire.

And that is the wonderful about dreaming - we all have them!!!

Both the 30/06 and 308 are great cartridges and there will be plenty to be had, if you don't already have....

No, biggest was .308. I have one, done the firing pin recall, have used it more than a few times, it is a sweet shooter, but not meant for heavy rate of fire. It's got a reasonably light profile barrel, and only holds a few rounds anyway. Good rifle, just not a fighting weapon IMO.

Mine never had any issues, actually shot quite nicely. As far as being high capacity, I never worried about that either. I'd just get and take more mags if needed.

You better reconsider the Garand. I went through this same debate with myself for several years before I bought a couple Garands.

BAR, Remington, and someone makes a 30-06 version of an AR. Way expensive and iffy reliability. All three of those have one thing in common though, through the roof spare magazines and low capacity for the main part.

Spare "mags" for the Garand, less than a buck apiece, available every where. No special order. 80 years of proven reliability. 8 round capacity and designed specifically for reliable, quick reloads under the stress of enemy fire.

i missed my chance at one about 10 years back, still kick myself.

if you plan on actually shooting all that ammo you need something that'll do the job.
just buy a Garand, or sell the ammo and get something in 308.
