How far will a standard military 7.62x39 round carry? I'm not blessed with a lot of wide-open spact to shoot, and I don't want to be a danger to my neighbors and their pets.

    Thanks,
    Ben

I have read on one box of shells that read "Dangerous within 1 1/2 miles+" If you need a backstop, a armored tank would be good as these are some screaming meanies.

    PK, Next Question

I was afraid of that. Can I buy reasonably cheap 'de-rated' ammo with, say a 3/4 mile range? Being an inexperienced hunter, I would need a very large backstop, like a 20 acre woods.

All SKS ammo that you buy is basically the same. I use nothing but Wolf hollow point ammo. If you go to a gunshow they are usually 20rds for $2. Stock up and enjoy. Also it depends on what you are shooting, the bullet would likely drop after hitting something like a hay bail and go into the ground. The best backstop though would be to make a mound of dirt to prop/stick your target on.
