Aftermarket 8rd 1911 Magazines: Serious Use or Gamer Gear???

The reason I present the above title and question is that: First off to my recollection I've never bought a 1911 type pistol that came with a 8rd magazine from the factory. And yes I know they exist.
Secondly every single aftermarket 8rd magazine I've tried has never been reliable with defensive ammunition.
For the record: Wilson #47, Chip McCormick/shooting Star magazines and 7 to 8rd conversion kits and now these by Metalform.

When I got them I could pretty well deduce that they'd be problematic. Just by the flat no dimple follower.

IMHO these might be okay for gun games running FMJ RN, cast RN or SWC maybe or maybe not.
But not XTP 230gr JHP out of my pistol, at least not 8rds.
I might try a Springfield Armory Inc. branded 8rd one and see what happens.

the only "store bought" 8 rd. 1911 mags I have (Ed Brown) work fine. most of my other assorted brand 1911 mags have been converted to 8 rd. and they also shoot fine. I have found that if a mag is bad (for whatever mystical reason they go bad) it doesn't matter whether it has a 7 or 8 rd follower, something else is the problem.

8 rd. magazines seem to me to be the industry standard now that strict conformance to GI pattern is no longer the governing doctrine. I think the reliability is there at this stage.

Well, here's the quandary. My pistol with every single 7 Rd magazine eats XTPs like a 7yo kid candy.
I don't know I guess I had hopes these would work as well and I wouldn't have to fiddle with searching too hard.
They feed fine at....7rds. However try and pry the rounds out of the mag by hand and they hang up...🙄.

When I get around to loading some more practice 230gr Hornady HAP JHP's which have the same profile as the XTPs I'll give them a whirl and see what happens.
I'm also lining up possible other brands to try like Ed Brown and either Springfield Armory OEM 8rd ones or MEC-GAR since they look like the main contractor for the S.A. Inc. ones.

My Wilson Combat magazines have performed flawlessly with a myriad of defense hollow point ammo for at least 15 years. The Taurus PT 1911 pistols that I have owned came with 8 round mags too, and they all worked well. Maybe quality control isn't very good these days.

I've been running Chip McCormick magazines for about 20 years without a problem feeding anything
I have tried Metalform and Promag in 1911 and other pistols. Not a fan of either.

I've used Chip McCormick, Wilson Combat, and I think Ed Brown. My 1911s run everything with all my magazines

Mc Cormick has worked for me too.

I have used Wilson Combat 8 round magazines in my Springfield Milspec 1911 for 15+ years. I have not had any issues with any ammunition. I mostly run Remington, Winchester and Fiocchi 230 grain HPs through it. Hopefully you can find a few 8 rounders that will work well in your 1911.

No expert, so don't ask me for the reason, but I've also had problems with 8 round mags, didn't matter if Chip McCormick, Wilson Combat, or Joe Blow's off brand. One thing I did notice, was when I loaded 8, would have a jam on the 1st round. When I loaded only 7, no jams. Again, don't ask me why! I've converted most of my mags to 7 round. Still have a couple 8 round Wilsons & a couple 8 round OEM Metro Arms mags (forgot the brand) for range use.

I forgot to add to my post about the 10rd Magazines from Wilson Combat. They have also ran flawlessly through both my Kimber 45s.
As far as aftermarket 1911's magazines go I buy strictly Wilson Combat but I have had no real problems with the factory mags from Colt, Springfield, or Kimber. I used Federal HST or Winchester Ranger HP and they all run flawlessly Ed. I've never run a Colt magazine in my Kimber etc... but WC's work great in all of them with all sorts of ammo.

I've no issue with 7 or 8 round magazines but my McCormick 10 round magazines would jam the first round. Found that the 10th round nose was at a downward or flat angle in the magazine and the slide would ram the bullet point in under the feed ramp and stop. I now ensure the rounds nose isn't down or flat in the magazine and the magazines run normally.

My Ruger came with both a seven round and an eight round mag. The seven was flawless. The eight rounder was responsible for all my issues. It would usually fail to go into battery with a full mag and one in the chamber.
