Amateur radio or communications forum

Hello, I have been using this forum for 13 years. One thing that people need to know more about is communucation. When SHTF how will people find out where to go or when to get out of an area. There is a warning system for hurricanes and severe weather. I have not heard the old civil defence warnings on AM radio since the 1980's. Sure don't think anyone has a warning for SHTF.

Well, we can send smoke signals like the Hekawi Indians did, good for long range communication but things can get messed up in the translation.
Next Hamvention I will attend and see what they have.

I haven't heard radio civil defense tests but do see/hear them on TV. Our disaster sirens here are tested the first Saturday of the month at 1 pm. Local hams voluntarily monitor the tests and report issues withe sirens.

WE get them on our cell phones here. We keep several hand held radios from decades ago, they claim 22 miles line of sight but 3-4 miles is tops in trees. We have had all cell towers go out during tornadoes and ice storms the last few years. A CB radio base and 5 watt mobil unit would be handy. The 5 watt units are great when people are traveling in convoys or hunting and get miles apart.

I used to have a LOT of Radio gear setup just for that in Alaska , but haven't set it all up here in Oklahoma. I have an HF rig and 2 meter Mobile as well as Handi-talkies , etc. I still have a Pile of gear but no help setting in a tower...

I have a few old Short Wave radios I reconditioned years ago. Also have 15 and 25 mile portable Midland and Motorola radios. They can be recharged or simply use disposable batteries. Another way of communication I have also set up in my garages is older but very sought after CB radios and two Marine VHF radios.

Have you heard a CB radio lately? Such vulger talk, nothing a child should hear. Marine VHF would be OK if you don't get on the wrong channel.

@pmDune can you see about getting one set up?

With 40 channels and the use of sideband or a.m. modulation there are plenty of free channels to choose from on cb. Most of the nasty banter is confined to channel 19, the trucker channel. Channel 9 used to be the emergency channel, often monitored by REACT, an emergency help volunteer group. Don’t know that they even exist anymore. I haven’t used CB in decades. Back then channels above 19 were rarely used, I remember when there were only 23 channels, not 40.

My parents had CB radios so they could communicate when hauling trailers. I remember sitting with my dad:

M: What do they mean by Smokey in the woods?
D: That means there is a cop up ahead.
<A little later>
M: Is there really an alligator in the road?
D: They just mean there is a pealed-off truck tire
<A little later>
M: The lady just said there are donuts at the next exit. Can we stop?
D: No. There are no donuts.

Yep, hams have unique language as well, but it isn’t as colorful. Lots of “Q” codes instead of 10 codes, a qso is a conversation (spoken as cue ess oh, but often said as cue-so instead). QRT means going off the air, etc, like 10-4 or 10-20 10-100. And hams like to say hi-hi to indicate laughter. The q codes and the hi hi were originally for Morse code, a lot of words were replaced with shorter forms, so less pounding on the brass key per conversation.

Amateur here for 30 years now. Not as radio-active as I used to be, but I don't think most are either. Years ago, two meters was crowded. Even if you had 30 repeaters around, there would be a lot of traffic. Today, I can scan repeater frequencies and hear nothing for an hour.....
I used to enjoy HF CW, it was quite relaxing.
Maybe someday I'll get motivated again.

I hear ya. My wife facebooks, and an old friend was talking about getting his license last year, so I told her to congratulate him and sign it with my call sign. AB8TF. He had no idea I was a ham. Motivated me to get the shack in order, still got some antenna repairs or upgrades to finish, well….antenna projects are never really finished. Maybe I will get to recapping some of the drake and Collins boat anchors I have someday. First on the list is my clipperton L, but I need better antennas before I start down that road.

No doubt about antenna projects.
My best dipole was a G5RV down in the Southern Tier here at my cabin. I made a rather lucky bow and arrow shot up a tree and I was successful in getting that thing way off the ground. It served me well for 10 or 11 years before it came down in a windstorm. I tried to make that arrow shot again, but it was not to be. Now 3 or 4 years have gone by and I have no antenna there. At home, I still have a 40 meter dipole that will load up on 80, but even HF is kinda quiet. I have horizontal beams for 2 and 6, with those tv rotators, each on their own mast. Both rotators are done however. They used to be fun for the occasional contest and chasing VUCC. I've confirmed 175 grids or so on 6 and maybe 75 on 2. That was always fun stuff.
Good luck with that amp !

Yeah, I have a simple discone that works from 6m past 70cm. Just rebuilt it. Used a 5 band Hustler trap vertical on 10-80, it came down last winter, it will go back up but for now just going to throw up an alpha antenna vertical (fmj), tunes all bands with an Ldg tuner. I have used it portable before.
I had yagi’s for 2m and 6m ssb, and a quasi on 432, but weather finally got to them. I have replacements ready, and for 220 as well. Just not up to the climb currently. Even if it’s only 35 feet. I will have the 6, the 220, and a dual band 2m/432 all on the same mast For ssb.
For mobile I have a bunch of halo’s for 6m 2m 220, 432, and even a mag loop for 10-30m. Just ordered an end fed dipole transformer so Ican run a wire and use the Ldg tuner too.
I used to rag chew mostly on 40, sometimes 80, but really enjoyed the uhf/vhf ssb contests. And homemade beams were cheap and easy, especially quagi’s or ”cheap yagi’s”. A tv rotor worked fine even with a 14 foot boom on 2m.
The amp was running great, but since it has sat a few years I figure it needs new capacitors.
It was good for 750 watts anyday. And I have a couple sets of spare tubes.

My first newspaper job was as a police beat writer, and I used to be fluent with the local version of 10-Code from listening to scanners all the time. There were several codes that weren't in the Jefferson county "dictionary", though.

There was 10-0Kilo for example which was code for "Ya'll gotta see this", which could mean anything from a "there's a guy walking a chicken on a leash," to "How did a washing machine get in that tree?", to "That one family finally has their Christmas/Halloween decorations out" to "You gotta see how hot this woman is I pulled over."

There was a code for one department that meant "Free food at the station - come quick."

There was also a code for "I don't know if I am witnessing a crime or not, but this is weird and I need a second opinion," and a code for "Send the bag of clothes, we got a naked person" and "Send one of the girls, that naked person is female"
