Lately I've been concentrating on a hand made walnut gunstock for a Mauser project. I have a hard time concentrating on multiple projects. With what's going on in society now I've decided to spend some time on loading .223 55 gr HPs and 110 gr 30 cal carbine soft points for home defense. I already have a good stock of components and powder as well a some loads I have already worked up so tomorrow I'll start. I'm only concerned about reasonable accuracy. Louisville is only an hour away so all the nonsense is getting closer.

And I just heard an officer has already been shot there.

A few years ago, a friend had a 17 year old who bought a new Rem 700 in .308. He was recoil shy. So, I loaded up his 60 rounds of empty brass for him, of 110 round nose soft points, those made for the .30 cal carbine. I loaded them to about 2,000 fps, about the same as the factory carbine load. When asked how they worked, they reported that he took 2 shots at 2 big hogs at close to 200 yards and both were one shot kills. They did not understand that they were plinking loads for him to get used to the gun.

They loved them. Point is, a 30 cal carbine will do the job.

I have several .30 carbine weapons. My all time favorite is my Ruger Blackhawk. I've killed a big pile of hog's with it, mostly under 50 yards. (It has it's own place to ride in the buggy)
For M-1 carbines, I've got a collectable winchester, (safe queen) and several parts guns that get shot a lot. These days, I can shoot the .30's for about the same price as rimfire magnums, with lots better killing power.

My savage AXIS, with a 20 inch .30 carbine barrel mounted, is MOA and better. No recoil to speak of and with the 110 Gr JHP or the 90 Gr.plinkster, just a ball to shoot at running hogs. That same barrel, on my Savage stryker, with a 6.5 x 24 x 55 scope is deadly out past 100 yards and carries easy.

One of my shooting buddies has built an AR in .30 carbine. It's pretty slick, but heavier than my M-1A carbines. I had a local customer, that was buggin' me to build him a 9mm AR, until I let him shoot my 7.62 x 25 AR...

My daughter lives in Lawrenceburg. Think that's pretty close to you as I remember. I've been thinking of moving there, so I can actually retire. I might have to rethink that.

Lawrenceburg is at least 2 hrs away from Louisville if I remember correctly. Louisville seems to be the only city here with those kinds of problems so far anyway and prayerfully it will stay that way.

Because of the risk if overpenetration but also wanting more penetration than a hollow point will produce I loaded up 40 Winchester cases with 50 gr Speer soft points using IMR 4895 just under max. They cycle fine in my AR.

If I am using the M1 Carbine for Self Defense, it is loaded with 110 grain jacketed soft point ammo.

I'll bet you're thinking of Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Everybody does that.

    Hornady 90gr XTP #31000
    H110: 11.6-16.8 gr. Max
    Win WSR primer
    C.O.L.= 1.550"
    1800-2300 fps
Given how this bullet performs out of a CZ-52, it should be wicked out of an M1 as a defense load with little chance of over-penetration.

X2 on the XTP, I used that load range on hogs, out of my 7.5 inch Blackhawk, with great success. Had a couple fail to penetrate the tough shoulder shield, quartering away shots mostly, BUT, I've had 20 ga. slugs do the same thing.

If you put the XTP in the rib cage, or neck, the damage from the expanded bullet AND the hydrostatic shock is extreme, Bang, flop, DRT. (note, Goblin's don't have shoulder shields)

I was thinking Lawrenceburg KY was further east. My mistake.

I would love to get ahold of the XTPs but right now they are unobtanium so I'll stick with the 110 gr soft points I have on hand.

If I ever get the chance to move out of the Peoples Democratic Republic to a place with civilized gun laws, one thing I plan to do is get a PPS-43C, pay the money to BATFE to get a tax stamp to turn it back into a short-barreled rifle so the shoulder stock can be unfolded, and use it against hogs and if necessary, freelance socialists. Those 110 grain softpoints sound like they would be just the things for those missions.

Louisville/Jefferson County was a raging Hot Bed of defiance 1n 1968. The riots and assaults, burning, thefts and lootings were ended by over 2,000 Natl Guard and 475 arrest were made. Where is the American "back bone:, today?
