It is recommended that you freeze (2 or 3 days) your dried beans and rice before long term storage to kill any bug eggs. If you use mylar bags with oxygen absorbers inside your buckets any bugs and/or eggs will not survive or hatch in the oxygen depleted mylar bag (if sealed properly).

Interesting, you should move that food to a metal container. Several times I have had mice chew through plastic 5 gal buckets. Good hint about freezing the food stocks first, works for flour and cornmeal too!

For water I would recommend 5 gallon US army cans and possibly a 55 gallon barrel or 2. You also might want to make a small hobo stove out of a 1 gallon metal can. you can cook on one and they don't take that much fuel. In WW II in the desert and elsewhere soldiers would take a tin can cut two holes just below the rim fill it half way full of sand then pour in a little gasoline light it and you can warm up food or water.

I already have crank radios and all the survival gear one could need. this was specifically to focus on long term, for me 3-5 yrs, food stash. something i can put away and not think about for a while, bit it will be there if i need it. picked up some store brand spam today to add to the meat selection.
