Decent looking rifle. I think I'd go for the "Walnut Dip" stock finish - it looks much like wood!

It does look like a very solid rifle though. I still would like to have it in 30-06. I also like the Wood dip, though I think the stainless/synthetic would be the way to go with this rugged gun.

I think the "wood dip" is still the synthetic stock, just a wood-style finish. Probably similar to the camo-finish I've seen that the stock is dipped into, and the image is bonded onto the material.
I like the black matte myself, but the stainless would be nice!

I went to wally world today and they finally had one there. The guy working sporting goods said this was the second one they had and they were going to get them in one at a time to see how well they will sell. This one was a 270 I think I'd rather have the 30-06. If my wife dosn't spend all the money on Christmas I am going to buy one. I like the feel of the action, seems like a great gun for the money, and I am partial to Mossberg I have several of their shotguns, and like all of them.

Not their first rifle by any means! Mossberg has a long history of producing at least two bolt-action rifles, the models 800 and 810. Also, they produced a plain but good lever-action somewhat similar to Marlin's Model 336.
Not to mention nearly a century of building a lot of fine twentytwo rifles.
Their success in pump shotguns is a relatively recent development in their history.
They even marketed a Single-action western-style revolver for a short time.

Mossberg is an old and respected name in rifle circles. :)

Sorry, SS - I really like them old Mossy's! :)

I've been threatening myself to get a good .30-06 for some time - this new Mossberg could well be the ticket! Though I gotta admit, it wouldn't be long before I'd be looking for a nice walnut stock to drop it into.

I would imagine it wouldn't be hard to drill and mount a regular slingstud, for a bipod. I've seen it done with other synthetic stocks.

Nice thing is we can disagree. Why in the world would Mos. build it in 06 or 270,two anteeeeks.Makes no sence to me. new rifle antique cartrage. If I was going to have a antique I would think along the lines of a "Quigley down under"otherwise the short mags is the way to go. Have to take a step back just to open the bolt. HMMMMMMMMMMMM

Well the old 30-06 and 270 are among the most widely used today, you know.
But I know where you are coming from. I expect to see Mossberg chamber then in more calibers soon enough. They are just waiting to see how good this thing sells.
I personally believe it will sell very good. The budget market for high powered rifles is growing.

:) Yep, do the old "tried and true" first, then bring in the new-fangled wonder loads later.
I haven't tried the new short magnums yet, and I dislike the big belted magnums - it's just too much oompf for our hunting down here! It's funny seeing all the hard-kicking Magnums winding up on the pawnshop shelves after hunting season each year, and the guys go back to 270's, 30-06's and even thutty-thutties.

Not as much of a hornets nest as I expected. Maybe this will help. The 270 fans have never opened there minds to the 7 mm. almost the same dia. BUT there are more choices in bullets,in fact more than the 308 cal. 7s and 762 by far out perform the 270. I know that someone will say "well MY 270 BLA BLA BLA" But will never open a book that gives the real stats. If you hit what your aiming for than who cares, but miss one cause of the stats(which you will never know) lets see we blame the wind a stick or tree or hopefully yourself. Picking the correct cal. is in part a personal choice and sometimes difficult. Just look......see what there doing with the new short 8MM. Its just another choice. My choice is to let old sleeping dogs lie.

Talked to a gun dealer regarding the new Mossberg rifle. He said he it competed with the Remington 710 and if it was at all similar, he would not have it. He said the barrel was "pressed" in rather than "screwed" in and that would cause accuracy issues. But some of you here have shot it and not had accuracy issues. Is that because it is new?

Also, when I looked at the rifle specs on the Mossberg website, there were different model numbers for the same rifles. Does anyone know the distinguishing characteristics between the guns? Barrel length, stock, finish, etc were all the same. Must be something not on the websites.

Basically, it's a choice between two calibers and four stock finishes (all synthetic). Eight basic "models". I hope they add stainless later. :)
