Good morning all. It`s about 2:55 am, Saturday .
Got my coffee. Bagel with cream cheese.
Will be loading up the truck with my gear. Snake boots, back pack, cross bow, etc.
Son will be here at 4am. As soon as he`s loaded up ....... we`re out of here.
2 things to note. One, the check in station opens at 5 am. AS this is a "permit"
issued archery hunt, the Game Warden checks his list against your issued permit to make sure they match. If yes, your issued a numbered permit for your dash. Off you go.
Two. Getting in line early as apposed to late dictates how fast you clear "customs" and can
then head to your hunting area.
WE are hunting an area that`s way back in the WMA. Takes a little time to get there as the
dirt road is not the best. Lots of pot holes. Big and small. Lots of water/mud.
From our parking spot I`ve got a decent walk to my ground blind. Through all sorts of different terrain. Hence the snake boots. Got a good head lamp as well. Yes,there are snakes.
My son has a different route. Same type of terrain.
Last week we scouted and built both ground blinds. trail is marked. Bright eyes.
As we`ve had some really heavy rain of late, mosquitoes will be out and about.
But, my Therma Cell keeps me in protective shield. I can hear-um but that`s it!
Long about 8am or so when the sun starts to peek, they vanish. off goes the Therma Cell.
That thing has saved my bacon more times than I can count.
At the moment it`s 77 degrees out. Going to be in the lower 90`s later on. Going to be
    another warm one.

We were #2 this morning. Plenty of head lights behind us.
    Checked in Ok.
Road was worse than expected due to logging trucks. State issued a contract for tree logging.
We got to our area which is a primitive camping site. Shut down during hunting season.
Got geared up and off into the dark we went. Need a new head lamp.
Navigating through thick brush, tall grass always a challenge.
After a decent hike, I got to my ground blind. My arrival was greeted by every mosquito with in 5 miles. or so it seemed.
But....But my Therma Cell once again saved me from their assault. Not even close.
With in a few minutes there was peace in the valley. Not a mosquito to be seen or heard!
Sun came up. Beautiful morning. Around 10 am it got hot. Early Fl hunting can be brutal.
Bottom line. Saw nothing. Only one 5 point Buck had been checked in
Will be back at it tomorrow morning. Day #2.

Permit I have is good for 4 days. It`s the first archery hunt of the season.
There are 2 permitted archery hunts for this WMA.

    Good morning all.
It`s now about 3:40 am Sunday morning. Don`t know how my day will go as I
noticed a Black Cat lounging on my front side walk. Feral cats. They own the night.
Starting a little later today. On the front end, a tad more sleep. on the back end,
a little less sitting in the dark.
Temp out side, a balmy 77. Another in the 90`s day. Humidity, 93%. HOT!
Long about 9:30-10 am, shade is always welcomed. I`m no gluten for punishment.
Another long walk in the dark. Ending with me sitting on my small, 3 legged,
folding stool, while my Therma Cell protects me from the on onslaught of
mosquitoes . Almost forgot.....when the time is right, Sweat Bees.
All that being said, nothing better than being out in the woods all by your lonesome
    just enjoying the moment.

Up date on day one. Yesterday. Asked the Check in guy this morning how many vehicles checked in yesterday and how many Deer were checked in.
He said, 30 vehicles checked in and 2 Deer checked out. One buck and a doe.
That means only 30 out of 60 permit holders showed up. On a week end day no less.

This morning ,day 2 of our hunt , was slowed by a misty fog. In the dark of night
on a winding, forest service dirt road, full of ruts where at places the road is so narrow, that when meeting an on coming vehicle somebody has to give.
We just moved like we were in free way traffic. Slow. Lots of blind turns.
Did come up on a deer on the side of the road. Just stood for a tad then walked off into the brush.
The long and the short of it is, I had 2 turkey walk by. My son had a stare down
    with one.
The fog just added to the morning. One minute you couldn`t see squat.
The next, things just materialized as the fog lifted.
Sun got up over the trees and like magic, the heat and humidity followed.
Pulled the plus around 12 .

    Time: 3:26am
3rd day of our Archery hunt.
Had a thunder storm last night. The rain `s not going to help.
The service road will not doubt will be a mess. Pot holes full of water/mud. My truck
will come out looking like its been thru the wringer.
Everything in the woods will be wet. Including me.
76 degrees at the moment. Cloudy. not as hot as yesterday. In the mid 80`s.
Radar shows rain around. I`m ready for that as well.
As today is a week day, I suspect attendance today will be light. Most folks have to
    work.
Another great day in the woods. Looking forward to it.

Day 3 hunt in the books.
The service road I thought would be a mess this morning did not disappoint.
My truck looked like the last truck in a monster truck mud race. I had to pressure wash it when I got home. Now, back to normal. Till tomorrow that is.
Yesterdays totals as per the check out guy, 29 vehicles in . No deer out.
At this point in time it looks like about a 50 % turn out on hunters using their permits.
I might add, there is an antler qualifier on Buck. Very strict. Buck are seen
but if they don`t meet the guide lines, they get a pass. No mulligans.
Permitted rules and regulations for hunts of any kind at certain WMA`s
can be different than public land. All are strictly managed.

This morning was foggy. very comfortable.
It gets light and I`m on my little stool. Nothing.
About 9am or so I decide to pack up and head back into the brush.
I`m just moving a bit then stopping. I do this for maybe 2 hours.
Now I not exactly lost but I have no idea where I`m at.
No worry. Out comes my cell and I light up my GPS.
Or, I`m here. Need to go this way. I`m in no hurry so I hunt on the way out.
I look like a drowned rat, as everything has dew on it . Plus, the humidity got my
    sweat glands working.
Back in there some where , I took a break and had my snack. Kentucky Fried
    chicken. Stuff was really tasty.

Blaster: You still live by the creed, if it`s brown....it`s down. :)

I am a meat hunter and love seasons when "brown goes down" is the rule! big racks look cool but I'd rather eat a spike or doe any day. :)
sounds like you still had fun and that's all that's really important. after all, that's why its called hunting and not killing.;) hunting in Fla. this time of year IS brutal. and I sweat like the proverbial pig. sometimes I hope for rain just so it cools me down!
#1 on the Therma Cell. they work great. refills are a little costly. I mostly use the Pic coils. $.98 at Wally World. because I am cheep. I also use a "Bug Tamer" jacket but sometimes even thats too hot to wear.

    It`s 3:54am
Day 4. Final day of my Archery hunt.
Temp at the moment. 75 degrees. High 85. Humidity 95%.
More rain last night. Looks like my truck is in for another mud bath.
Was thinking of moving to another location but this section just has to much sign.
Talking with other guys at the check out station and looking at what`s been checked in (very little) so far, Visual contact has been low.
This WMA is about 13 thousand acres. Don`t forget, loggers have been al over this place . Big equipment. Lots of racket. Could be the deer have gone nocturnal.
Anyway, We`ll be back out this morning. I`m moving deeper into a section that`s backed up by a river. My son likes his area so he`s good.
    We`ll see.

Blaster: Thanks for your comments. What are "Pic coils ?"

hope you was able to score today.
Pic is the brand name. they are the coils you light. they give off a smoke that repels bugs. Wall Mart has them for the best price I've seen anywhere. $.98 for a package of 4. they come with a thin tin holder but I buy a flat metal pan looking thing that can hang on my stand with a lit coil in it. works good and won't start a fire.
