I have very pitted barrel in a good M1 receiver. Would like to purchase tools to remove and replace the barrel myself. Is there anything I could soak the receiver/barrel in to loosen it up a bit before trying to remove it. Any tricks you guys know to make it go easier.

just squirt a little oil down in there and let it soak. and definately make sure to use a proper action wrench- hate to see a garand reciever trashed.

Dropping the upper receiver/barrel (minus stock) in an Ultrasound would probably break light rust off the areas where humidity could migrate. Just the same, I'd soak the entire receiver/barrel in Kryoil or FP10 for about 2 weeks. Find someone with an Ultrasound that can handle a rifle, and your in buisness. Give it about 30 minutes in an Ultrasound and you're set. But mind you, replacing a barrel is not for beginners. Final rotational draw, headspacing involve measurements, precision and technique.
