I've descided to invest in an Ar15, but nothing too complicated, just a good shooter, at a descent price, what brand should i go with?
also will the current ar's accept the older hand guards, the triangular style guards?
thanks,
-Jesse

Jesse,
First, the old triangle handguards will fit no problem (on a 20" barrel that is). If you are going to buy it already built, depending on exactly what kind you want, Bushmaster, Olympic Arms, and DPMS are excellent choices. The Cheapest being Olympic. Best bet is to get a shotgun news and look thru it for the kind you want (you'll also get an idea of the price). The only brand I know of to stay away from is Hesse Arms. I personally like ASA and have never had a problem, but alot of people said they have poor customer service. Hope that helps! Eric
thanks eric, it helped, basicaly what i want is a reasonably accurate rifle, that'll accept hi-caps, and has the look of the rifle the guys in 'nam carried, no custom building and the such.
thanks,
-Jesse
jesse,i went to a gun show and bought stripped lower receiver(rock river arms) for 100.00,bought kit for 400.00 from model 1 sales(16.5" C.A.R.)and 3 30 round mags from forrest inc for 40.00 and put it together in about an hour.total price 540.00.you might go that route .you can buy as you go if you are on a budget

That sounds like a good idea, as i am on a budget, one question, will any lower fit any upper? how does that work?
-Jesse
pretty much, you can swap from a 20 inch a-2 over to 16 inch CAR and over to a 24 inch bull barrel.if you buy a kit ask the dealer if the upper is pre assembled and head space checked.most of them are.the lower is pretty easy to assemble,no special tools are really needed, but there are a few tools that make it easier
You can get a compleat DPMS lower with stock at www.auctionarms.com for under $300.00...And www.jtdistributing.com has uppers and kits, that is one thing the AR has going for it you can find parts and and ad ons out the wazoo!
Giguy is almost completely right. Most AR-15s are compatible lowers to uppers. Older model Colts have different size pins in the lower receivers to stop civilians from "militarizing" the "civilian Sporter". I believe they also have a block not removed from the lower receiver that prevents you from installing full auto and burst control triggers. If you're own a real tight budget Olympic makers a "plinker" that retails for around $599.99. and yoru not going to beat that. it depends on what you looking for and how much you want to spend. They make adaptors fo the old colts so that you can put new uppers on them, but once you have to start fidgetting with the gun and adding extra parts to get it together your heading down fecal nightmare lane. The Oly "Plinker" has a 16" barrel and A-1 style sights, both of which are repalcable, but it depends on what you want to do with it. Past the plinker all of the guns work pretty much the same, except that a lot of people seem to hate Hesse. I'm partial to Oly as that's what I own, but I've shot Bushmasters to and they're also good guns. Prettier than Oly's to but about $200 more.

I've never seen a finer finish than DPMS. I'm slowly contemplating an AR for when my ship comes in, and am vascillating between Oly Plinker and DPMS sweet 16 bull barrel. Price difference would probably be about $50. Sites and standard AR carry handle are good about the plinker, high accuracy and super finish are good about the sweet 16.
DPMS has introduced the panther light 16, it has a 16" 1:9 twist light barrle, a pind CAR stock, and all at 5 3/4 pounds. looks like a M-4 Retail is $699.00 it might be worth a look www.dpmsinc.com :assult:
Will be picking up my Olympic Arms AR15 today. I went with the 20 in A2 H-bar with the camo stock set. Will post a range report after the weekend. Vigilante , good luck on your choice. Good shooting everyone!!!
New AR15

Got a new Bushmaster XM15, 20" match bbl A2 sights yesterday. Headed to the range tomorrow. Should be fun.
