Does a hand gun have to have a rifled barrel?
I am asking this in regard to the Mossberg Shockwave 590 and it's legality as a hand gun.
Thank you for any info or opinions.

Ask the AHJ what their definition is.

    Who claims it isn't?

It has been quoted that a hand gun cannot have a smooth bore legally,I dunno but seems to be the opinion of some probably more up on the laws than my self.
Just an example of my ignorance, what is the AHJ?

Rave, it's always been my understanding that handguns had to have rifling.

Now saying that, there is any number of exceptions granted to makers and some rules have also changed.

    Hope this is somewhat helpful

    Authority Having Jurisdiction.

We shouldn't even need legal definitions of these things. Imagine if "smartphone" had a legal definition, and building in something like an alarm clock made it illegal.

Yes. An other than black powder replica handgun cannot be a smooth bore.

I will bet the mossy meets shotgun requirements so as not to be NFA. There are many pistol grip shotguns but all have criteria as to be not NFA.

Not that there should be an NFA to begin with.

It's technically NOT a pistol grip.

The mossberg shockwave is not a handgun, it's a firearm.

Just a Firearm. Not a handgun, not a shotgun or a short barreled shotgun or an AOW (any other weapon)... it's just a firearm.

The only way it might be considered a pistol/handgun is if your individual state law defines it as such but federally speaking... it's only a "firearm" and for the most part just as non-regulated as a bolt action rifle or a hunting shotgun.

The Mossberg 500 model with the actual pistol grip also has a longer 20" barrel so that the over all length is long enough to NOT make it an AOW.
