Just did my first post on my great grandfather's rifle over in antique firearms. Spending some time in Bend, Oregon with my new granddaughter, 7 months old and already "learning" about firearms. She was on a deer hunt in the snow at 3 weeks old -- staying warm at camp with her grandma while her mom and dad were out hunting. I always had fun with guns, but my son is the one who is carrying on the family tradition. He's an avid bow and rifle hunter, takes a professional approach, builds guns, develops his own loads, and is trying to bring me up to speed. Life is good.

Welcome to the Forum from the Peoples Democratic Republic of New York. If you know antique rifles, you might be able to help another newbie who is trying to identify a battered caplock that is incomplete. My current guess is that it is a Springfield Model 1863, a slightly simplified version of the Model 1861 rifled musket that was the main battle rifle of the Union Army in the Civil War. Why don't you take a look and see if you can shed some light on it?
