If you could only own 5 guns,

which might they be? Massad Ayoob poses this question in the following video.

If you are ONLY into defensive guns OR only into hunting guns OR only into competiton guns, this might not be a hard choice BUT if you are into a number of various firearms endeavors this might not be easy to limit one's battery to such low number.

It might be especially hard if:

-you collect guns
-you have a number of defensive guns tactically stowed all over different parts of your home, vehicle, airplane, boat, person and/or business
-you hunt multispecies

Handguns: .22, .380, 9mm, .357Mag, 40S&W, .45ACP
Rifle: .22, .223, .308, .300 WSM
Shotgun: 12ga
Couldn't settle on just five.... would need seven - pistols: .22, 9mm, 40 S&W Rifle: .22, .223, .308 Shotgun: 12ga Choices based on ammo availability, perceived threats, harvestable game
List could change with the addition of different firearms/calibers/threats
Also, would have to have a comparable stash for each of my family members, relatives, friends, and pets.

For example for when 5 ain't quite enough:

1. handgun in kitchen drawer
2. revolver in bathroom medicine chest and for holster carry a hunting sidearm
3. auto pistol for on-person carry away from home
4. police pump in bedroom by bed and for camp
5. shotgun for dove
6. CF rifle for deer
7. 22 rifle for furbearers or varmints like fox and gopher
8. optional: AR carbine for when SHTF
9. optional: a safe queen for show and investment

One's personal gun battery depends on a myriad of things. Lifestyle, region, hobby, recreation, culture, vocation and utilitarian needs.

In Walt Disney's Old Yeller the homestead cabin had but one all-purpose gun, a single-shot rifle. For security, hunting game and putting sick/hurt animals down. America was the land of riflemen. The rifle was the single most-important gun for homesteaders, frontiersmen, men in the fur trade, explorers, mountain men and Army soldiers in war. Southerners and farmers might regard their shotguns as all-important. A city-dweller or cowboy puts value on the handgun.

I would just get two.

An AR-15 and and AR-10 lower.

What I put on them would not count as a gun, and there are a LOT of choices.

Shhhh, don’t say that out loud. And remember, you need special mags for some of those choices, and even mag well adapters for certain ones.

I do like my two Model 39A rifles. Also one of my most accurate long range rifles is an older Win. M70XTR Featherweight in 270.

at least he got the winchester 70 right.

all a good reloader needs is a bolt action 30-06, and a 12 ga.
the 0-6 can go from mimicking a light 32-20 handgun all the way up to Mooses... or the occasional Buffalo if one should happen to wander in the yard.
and the 12ga. can easily handle everything from quail to Mooses.... and the,, well you know.

it's all in how you look at things.

1. Colt or S&W .44 magnum
2. Ruger 10/22
3. Remington 870 12 gauge
4. Galil in 7.62x39
5. A quality bolt action in .338 lapua mag

Pretty much covers everything that I would need.

That being said, I personally prefer to have a lot of options. It's very doubtful that I could ever limit myself down that much lol.

That collection covers a lot of uses. Deep concealment, maybe not much so. Deer hunting in Indiana, Ohio and Iowa? I don't know. Maybe for the special January antlerless hunt in Iowa where any one of those rifles would be permitted. Dove, duck, grouse, phesant or quail hunting? Hmmmmm. Deer or elk hunting in the western states. Pretty much covered.

Oh, the .35 Rem would have you covered in Iowa for deer gun seasons.

The 20G works perfectly for the upland game birds you mentioned. It will work for ducks close range. And of course would do slugs for deer, and self defense ( including Bear or Moose defense ) no problem.

2) Ruger 10/22
3) Ruger single 6 with .22 mag cylinder too
4) 20 or 12 ga. pump shotgun with short barrel and field barrel with chokes.
5) Browning Hi power

Only Democrats talk about limiting fire arms. I don't want to give them any ideas on what limits we will accept.

If I could only own 5 guns:

1. Colt Trooper .357
2. Smith & Wesson Airweight .38 Special +P
3. Smith & Wesson SD9VE 9mm
4. Remington 870 Police Pump 12 ga.
5. Colt Carbine or M4 Carbine 5.56

Number 4 can be made into a dove gun or a deer gun with a simple barrel swap. I put priority of defense guns over hunting guns.
