If you could only own 5 guns,

which might they be? Massad Ayoob poses this question in the following video.

If you are ONLY into defensive guns OR only into hunting guns OR only into competiton guns, this might not be a hard choice BUT if you are into a number of various firearms endeavors this might not be easy to limit one's battery to such low number.

It might be especially hard if:

-you collect guns
-you have a number of defensive guns tactically stowed all over different parts of your home, vehicle, airplane, boat, person and/or business
-you hunt multispecies

Only Democrats talk about limiting fire arms. I don't want to give them any ideas on what limits we will accept.
Thankfully in pro-gun states your gun numbers are limited by only your budget and bank account. If you need 15 guns to meet all your lawful purposes, then so be it. You can only fire two at a time at the very most.

In the 13 years that I have been on G&G, what I consider the must have firearms have evolved, Different threats, planned uses, regional requirements (state hunting and permissable firearms or ammo), and the SHTF scenario. Glad we can adapt and adjust to meet the changing times.

Most of these if not all of my must-have-five have been in existence longer than the past 13 years:

1. Colt Trooper .357
2. Smith & Wesson Airweight .38 Special +P
3. Smith & Wesson SD9VE 9mm
4. Remington 870 Police Pump 12 ga.
5. Colt Carbine or M4 Carbine 5.56

Number 3 was introduced more recent than the past 13 years: in 2012. Number 4 originated in the 1950's and I think Number 1 came at least as early as the late 1960's. I think Number 2 came out in the 1980's. Number 5; I'm not sure when the first civilian Colt CARBINE AR in 5.56 came out.

When you're in the military you tend do keep your house hold items to a level that never exceeds your weight authorization when you have to move. So firearm acquisitions usually increase after retirement or seperation from military life and one can settle down. It's amazing what one can acquire in 20 years after retiring from the military.

I was at Ford Ord, CA. An Army light infantry division. 7th ID. Sergeants would tell soldiers about traveling light all the time. Thankfully, my aviation unit had more trucks than helicopters and such rigs were for ground support and I was a motor pool mechanic. I never had to hump much equipment on the hoof. I knew one young fellow who was a helicopter mechanic and/or crew chief and would carry a large flight bag to the field as well as one of two duffels. He said he carried enough to be comfortable in the field. One of my two duffels was full of pogey bait always on field manuevers. One of my motor pool section sergeants once remarked that the infantry had the best maintained vehicles in the army. They would hate like the devil to hump any more than they really had too.

I'd have to sell off a boat load or two in order to get down to 5, and then need to get rid of a couple safe's. I think I'll just keep all of them, because I can!

I sold my really nice guns a couple years ago while broke. I kept all the crap ones. I made money on every single gun I sold, revolver, 1911 and rifle. 20% in 2 cases.

The garbage I kept will get the job done. I naturally kept all my good glass.

I have my Norinco .22 I think it's an early JW15? It cost me $75. I floated it, fixed the God Awful trigger scoped it, best .22 ever.

Zastava mini mauser .223. When at the time of purchase the cheapest bolt action centre .223 on my local market. Lotsa work, I sourced a factory beech stock in favour of the black mouth guard material item mine had. VXI 3.5 to 10 or something? One hole at 100. Around the receiver is a kind of old Ruger plumb color.

My infamous Rossi .308 break action.. Has a trigger shoe I think, it has a custom hammer extension I'm left handed, Stopped the barrel touching anything eventually, it has a Gold ring VXIII 3.5 - 5 illuminated reticle . 40 dollar saddle, 2 dollar horse. But it breaks in half.. easy to carry. Worth nothing to no one other wise I wouldn't get 25 dollars for it.

4 and 5 and shotguns. A 1969 Winchester Model 370 single barrel that had the barrel shortened in the early 80's ( it's fully registered how it is, thank you ) and one of those old working man's 12ga side by sides, hammer gun, they were made in Russia and the eastern block by the bushel in the 50s, It's had it, purely and ornament.

Bersa .380 Firestorm, as EDC.
AR15, or SKS for home defense.
SKS, or AR15 as a truck gun.

Do we realize that our political predecessors penned our 2nd Amendments freedoms long ago? Why then do we continually ask the forum this? what if you could only own 5 firearms? Better yet remember that anti gun poloticans can gain knowledge here as well?

1) AR-15, 5.56 & with a .300 Blk upper for added option (Since this is USA only way to go for semi-auto rifle is AR's IMO, for parts, though SKS & AK-47 still good options)
2) Good semi-auto handgun, I'll leave this open since I'm still open on what I'd choose, plus it depends on what the person wants or the type of person that'll be shooting it. Handguns are so widely open for debate on every spec of them, so IMO you can't narrow it down to one end all.
3) 12ga. shotgun with barrel &/or choke options. I like my Benelli M4, though a 870 is hard to pass up since parts are plentiful in the USA (if needed) plus a 870 is tried an true.
4) Ruger 10/22, I'd think everyone could agree on this for a .22
5) Good bolt action .308 if you're in more open country, this is open for debate also as to brand but I'll stick to that caliber for more common mass produced availability

With these 5 guns it pretty much covers all your survival needs at a safe base camp/ home or ? Though SHTF you only get 2 or 1 guns to carry !
So only thing truly important is # 1 & 2.

Decisions, decisions........

Another 5.

My dad's .22 Savage Model 23
My 94 Winchester carbine, a gift from my dad when I was 14.
My great, great, grandfather's Whitney 12 gauge double, purchased by him around 1876.
My 1871 Swiss Vetterli, been in the family since the 1920's.
My 1831 Springfield 69 caliber musket, been in the family for who knows how long.

But that leaves me with only 2 usable firearms.........

The 2nd Amendment is the assurance of firearms ownership.

I was confused. I thought you didn't like us discussing gun ownership of any type. You ask why we discuss owning only 5. I think I get it.

We do it because we enjoy doing it. At least I do!
