I really like the 1903 Springfield. I have a .35 Whelan on a 1903 Mk I that I built almost 30 years ago, and have taken numerous game animals with -- all in one-shot kills.
I picked up a 1903/A3 that had been "sporterized" and I inherited a 1903/A1 that had also been sporterized years and also rebarreled to .35 Whelan. I figured that I did not need to Whelans and I wanted to do something with the 03/A3.
So first I sent away for 03/A1 "milled parts" to replace the stamped trigger guards/floor plates etc. on the 03/A3. Next I sent both rifles to a gunsmith and had the the 03/A3 rebarreled to a 6.5/06. Why 6.5/06? I have been shooting a 256 Newton for years and wanted to retire the rifle, but I liked the 6.5 caliber so figured a standard 6.5/06 would be easier to reload.
Then I had the 03/A1 in .35 Whelan rebarreled to a .338/06. I had both rifles tapped for scopes. Now I need to rebed the actions and get some decent scopes and then head for the shooting range.
