Lately I have been interested in purchasing the S&W M&P22C model pistol. I like the size and ergos, i like that its .22lr and somewhat resembles my 9mm pistol. Currently I have several .22lr firearms including a ruger MkIII 22/45 and a heritage .22 combo revolver, and a ruger 10/22. That said, I have a TON of .22lr and the ammo has become cheap enough to stock up even more on( which i recommend all of us do so if possible while the prices are as good as the have been in a long time!)...

I was set on getting a Ruger sr-22 until my friend turned me onto the S&W.

im looking for something that will be a fun range gun, a possible back pack/ survival pistol, a home/ personal defense gun, and a trainer for my 9mm carry gun.

So, do any of you have this pistol and if so what are your experiences?

well i just bought one, first time ever buying a firearm online. Palmetto state had a special for $249, thats the best price i have seen ,i was considering it at 285, so i couldnt pass it up for the price.

It's being shipped to cabelas near me so i can pick it up.

so no ar upper for a while, but its ok, i think that this is a better use of the money, my ar upper i have currently will do 90 % of what i want it to.

I am interested in selling my ruger mkIII 22/45 to help offset the cost of the s&w.

Jaison I was originally looking at the sr-22 because i have a ruger sr9c as my primary handgun. so i figured that would be a natural partner. however as i researched more and talked to a friend of mine who has both the sr and mp pistols he pointed out that the S&W was actually more similar in operation than the sr22. due to sa only and striker(internal hammer) vs hammer fired.

Also once i went to a shop and got my hands on both side by side the M&P22c was the clear winner in the feel dept. its very well designed as far as ergos go, at least for me.

And then there is price, the ruger is more expensive, generally speaking.

Other than the original ppk/pps series ive never been much a fan of Walther pistols. thats just personal opinion though, nothing to really back that up.

If you are or have been looking for a .22 semi auto this PSA price of $249(NIB) is the best deal I have found and ive been researching for like 2-3 months now.

Man this feels like its taking forever, Amazon 2 day shipping has me spoiled!

I got the shipping notice yesterday but it didnt move until today, says itll be here monday. I suppose considering the low price its worth the wait. from what ive read it seems that in Colorado there is no 3 day wait, can anyone confirm or refute that?

also since this thing has a threaded barrel ive been toying around with the idea of a fake suppressor or some kinda of blast deflector.

Just cause it would look cool.

What kind of ammo do you guys use in this kind of pistol? the consensus seems to be cci mini mags. I like federal bulk box stuff in my other .22's, ill try it in the mp22c as well, but i think im going to pick up a few boxes of mini mags as well. would you pick hp or rn? im partial to 40 gr HP's, at between 1080 and 1280 fps. although i do have box of the Winchester super X 40 gr 1435 fps, very potent for a.22lr. that is from a rifle probably but hey its a high powered 40 gr Hp. what do you think?

Its awesome. So light weight, the grip is perfection in my hand, and I might have to get a MP shield 9mm after this.

cant wait to shoot it this weekend! got lots of diff ammo to test, already cleaned it and its ready to go.

It's exactly what i wanted, a small light semi auto .22lr that i can easily store in a back pack or carry on me. yes its .22lr but its better than nothing and for the weight its great.

also it very closely matches my 9mm sidearm, the sr9c, the sights are the same 3 dot set up, etc.

Exercised the Colt Huntsman along with some of his big brothers last week. I've had good results with Federal in the bulk packs regarding .22lr.

I have always liked federal ammo in general, whether it be .22 rim fire or center-fire ammo.

here is a sampling, although not complete, of what I plan to shoot tomorrow.

So, the mp22c shot all types of ammo i fed it with no issues except the quiet 22, which was to be expected. I had one malfunction with some federal bulk box 36 gr hp. the round felt weak, only extracted about 1/2 the way, not the guns fault.

I did have a bit of an issue with the rear sight.... while the pistol grouped fairly well( its no target gun like the mkIII 22/45), it shot about 4 or so i thought" left. the rear sight is adjustable for windage and elevation and there are little allen keys supplied to adjust... so i assumed.. I tried to turn the screw to adjust the sight right and im pretty sure it stripped it. now, i took it into the range shop and the smith was able to get it a few turns with a quality allen set, i think the ones provided are crap. I went back out and shot it but it still seemed to shoot a little left, but better. I can definitely tell the sight is moved more to the right. I still cant get the screw to turn. going to order a set of my own and maybe some torx as well, this darn thing is so small all mine are too big, its like either .07 or 1/16. anyways, I started to realized that i was shooting it with the wrong part of my finger. once i straightened that out i was able to hit the targets(4" cirlces) alittle better, still left. so idk, Im going to take it out and shoot it again how it is, the trigger seems to pull back a little farther than my ruger which i think contributed to me pulling left slightly.

all in all i was happy with the function and reliability, just need to sort out the sights/ poi.

So, question, what type of ammo would you use in a .22 pistol for self defense?

40 gr segmented? could do alot of damage but also might not penetrate enough.

40 gr High velocity Hollow point? maybe better blend of penetration/ "expansion".

45 gr RN subsonic? best penetration would be my guess.

42 gr HP subsonic? decent penetration and maybe some expansion.

32 grn hp(stinger) super HV? does it really get that much velocity in a 3.5" barrel?

or good ole cci mini mag? 36 grin hp ?

please lets try to keep this specifically to .22lr ammo types for self defense from a pistol. this isnt so much about brand, I know cci is regarded as the best .22lr, but which bullet/loading type is the question.

Personally i tend to lean towards the heavier rounds as i dont think that short 3.5 in ch barrel will allow the stinger type rounds to generate enough velocity to make the proper use of their smaller 32 grain bullets.

where i stand is wondering if something like that 45 gn wincherster subsonic (1080) is as good as something like winchester 40 grn hyper velocity(1435 claimed fps). the hyper veolcity's still got the 40 gr bullet, which i like, its hp which i like, and even if the 3.5 inch barrel doesnt let it generate 1435 fps it should still be better than a 40 gr standard velocity right? and is the 45 gr bullet in the subsonic enough mass to make a difference?

something I notice about the mini mags is they are a little pointier than the other .22lr. I wonder if that has something to do with the penetration.

Update:

Had it out to the range a second time and it was both perfectly reliable and I figured out how to keep it on target, definitely one of my favorite guns!

also, I sent an email to S&W quite a while ago asking for a new rear sight or at least rear sight screw. never heard anything back from them until one day recently a new rear sight adj screw showed up at my doorstep!

Not the best customer service, but hey at least the followed through and did something. I bought a better allen tool set and all was well in the rear sight dept!

from the research ive done so far it looks like the velocitor is one of the better defensive options for .22lr.

question: it says single action. does it have a hammer that you can thumb back to cock it? or is it a internal hammer that is cocked by racking the slide?

I’ve had mine for a while now. It works well, is light and fun to shoot. I often shoot mine suppressed. I would absolutely recommend picking one up to anyone interested. Especially at the current prices.

Its hard to believe you can get something like this for such a low price!
