I recently picked up this old 45/70 for a song and a dance. The buttpad is about a 1/4" thick. Does anyone know if they came with any other pad, or will I have to do a replacement job. I have seen thicker 3/4" pads by Marlin. They are a reddish-brown with Marlin logo. Lists for 1895 and 1894. Obviously, this is not a permanent alteration. Or should I just go with a slip on ?? Any suggestions are appreciated !!

If you intend to just shoot the factory ammo (which is loaded down for trapdoor 45-70s) you could probably tolerate the thin butt pad just fine. No more felt recoil than a 12 gauge shot gun.

If you plan to shoot Buffalo Bore, or reload your own loads on the stout side, i would recommend buying the newer Marlin butt pad, OR get a Pachmayer Decelerator Pad for it.

The newer Marlin butt pads do a fine job, even with the hot loads.

    Agreed Ten Man

Here is a picture of a Marlin 450, with a Pacmayer pad.(took this yesterday)

This one actually was made for a shot gun.
But fit with a bit of sanding.
Was on sale for $16.00 at Sportsman Warehouse.

Here is a link, to Pachmayers site.

I will be shooting leverevolution 325gr factory at first, then reloading that same bullet to a little hotter load. I like the look in that pic Grizz !! Thanks for sharing.
