Picked up a model 1892 lever in .44-40 with the octagon barrel, dates around 1925 or so best I can tell. Pics up later today... Anybody here know anything about 'em?

Sorry about the other thread in the wrong forum guys, let's try it again.

Appears to be in pretty good shape sir. As I mentioned in the previous thread my only experience was handling a modern Rossi clone in that caliber, I subsequently bought the 357 magnum version though. Hopefully that will be a good shooter for you.

    that's not just a regular 92.
the lever at the front of the magazine is the giveaway.
the band right in front of the receiver on the barrel is the other.
    it's a takedown model.

Is that good or bad? I was wondering about the lever... I thought it might just me for opening the ammo tube. I honestly know VERY little about this stuff... my only levers are my dad's 1974 '94 and my Henry Golden Boy!

One of my pet peeves with firearms is the prior owners who didn't have a proper screwdriver that fit the screws. Of course there are many "supposed gunsmiths" operating with some cheapo Stanley screwdrivers they picked up at Walmart also, and they are botching up screws on a firearm everyday. Good looking rifle though; glad it's in some hands that will probably really care for it.

Good lord that drives me right up the wall. I'm already looking for a vintage patina screw to replace it! I had a ballbuster wood shop teacher that taught me all about that, there are nothing but high end screwdrivers in my boxes so it won't happen here.

that's a good thing as far as price.

I don't think [pretty positive] the checkering is factory.
but overall it looks to be in good shape.
the 44-40 was the most made caliber in the 92 rifles, but the vast majority went to south America and Australia.

the above link is a pretty good basic starter for the 92 rifles.
fortunately yours doesn't have all the gobbly gook those instructions have.
it doesn't have the safety, two piece firing pin,or rebounding hammer.
the only one of which I can sort of stand is the safety.

One really good thing about it being a take down model is not having to clean it from the muzzle end of the barrel.

ACfixer I would make me a nice custom case for the rifle to break down and store it in. Do you plan on shooting this any or hiding it in the safe

I was thinking the same thing. :)

I haven't honestly thought about it much... I don't think I could really change the condition of it much by shooting it so why not eh? It would look really cool in a case I agree.

I bought it from a buddy that needed some bucks and he's sort of one of those guys that thinks his hamburger is worth $10 until he hands it to you then it's worth $2. We searched Gunbroker and couldn't find anything too similar so we just searched "1892 octagon" and pretty much everything on there was listed (but not necessarily selling) for north of a grand, he really wanted a thousand for it but we settled on a little less.

True. Especially when you get that green flame with the torches.

You rascal. Good find. I'm still looking for one in that caliber with an octagon barrel and full length mag. to round out that part of my collection.

As was mentioned above, I think you lucked into a "takedown" version.

My bad for skimming. Didn't see the rifle broken down until the second visit to the thread. Good score man!
    You scored well!

Sure looks like the takedown magazine cuts into the capacity! But I doubt I'll be doing much high volume shooting with it so maybe the cool factor balances it out. ;)
