I have a 500 with a 18.5" smooth bore and 28" Vent Rib fixed mod choke.

I wanted to get another barrel, something that would give my setup the most versatility.

I kind of think I wanted to get a good riffled slug barrel. There are a few trophy slugster barrels on ebay. Then I'd be tempted to put a scope on there.

I also think it would be nice to get a barrel with the accuchoke sytem so I can have improved cyl., mod, and full chokes...but then I feel like I have some redundancy with my other fixed choke barrel, and did not want to just toss money away.

I figure I'm probably going to want this gun to cover all the basis, from a short range tacticle to a long range slug, with decent coverage in between.

I suspect that I might end up adding something like a 28" or longer riffled slug barrel with scope and a 28" accuchoke barrel. But I could surely be enlightened.

ebaY has a 24" riffled slugster with a Bushnell 3-9X32mm scope combo for $150, $200 BIN. I'd get it, but I think I wanted a longer slug barrel. Wouldn't that be more accurate?

There is also a 28" VR accuchoke with the 3 chokes for $60 at auction...done in 4 hours.

I've been thinking about going down to one scatter gun. With all the options for Remington 870's and Mossberg 500's out there, is there a need for more than one anymore? You can even get a muzzleloader barrel for the 500.
If you shoot competition or something I understand, but I'm looking at all my shotguns wondering why I have em all.
Maybe two...one tactical (870) and one hunting (500).

Damascus barrel = rifled barrel, got it. I was thinking Damascus steel which in knive making is as about as good as you can get for carbon steel.

The rifled slug barrel for my 500 doesn't say, rifled. It is rifled, but is labeled damascus. I realize it's a way to make steel. Saboted slugs are labeled to be shot out of damascus or rifled barrels. Check your thesarus too, Damascus is also a city in Syria. Was it made there? NO. It's a term used for different things, like a type of steel. If I'm wrong tell me, will ya Rich? Your one of the only ones I listen to on this website.

I personally have never seen a Mossberg 500 barrel labeled "Damascus" but in my experience, Twist steel and Damascus barrels should only be used with
Black Powder. Period ! They were not designed to take the pressure of Smokeless powder high velocity loads of todays ammunition. I will do some research and see what I can find out ! Thanks for the vote of confidence!

Ok, here is the scoop...in 1991 Mossberg made a MUZZLELOADER Combo Model 500 that included a 24" rifled barrel for BLACK POWDER, a 28" VR accu-choke Barrel, and an Additional 24" .50 caliber Muzzleloader conversion barrel with rifled bore and Iron sights for BLACK POWDER !!! These evidently were made so they could be used for Black Powder Hunts... So I think this is what you have !!!!

Maybe it's that kind of steel, but it's says damascus on it and it's rifled. If you think I was getting crappy about it maybe you should reread your own posts and judge yourself. I can shoot 300 yards with that sluggun using 3in sabot slugs and shoot pretty tight groups, good enough to take a heart shot 9 out of 10 times. You can see the grooves on the outside of the barrel like the entire thing was twisted to make the riflings. My father bought it for me 3 years ago, It might even be special made. I doubt it though. And just because I'm a newb, doesn't mean I'm new to shooting. And moose is the only one who's background I've heard about that's why I believe what he writes. If you don't want anyone else to put what they know on here maybe you should start your own private forum where you can decide who knows what. While re-reading you might notice that you guys seem to know everything, and every term in everyway it may be used. Are you english Majors? or do you think you know everything?

It's labeled for, 2 3/4 in and 3 in saboted slugs only. It must be specially made if you've never heard of it. It looks like a modern barrel. I'll ask my dad where he got it. I shoot 4 inch groups at 300 yards with it, using winchester sabot slugs. Maybe the person who made it mislabeled it, but I know it was made for slugs. It has a scope mount attached to it.

My friend, who has a rifled slug barrel for his 500, can shoot better patterns than that with his. His is factory stamped and it says rifled. He shoots the same type of ammo is me, too. For this model shotgun that's about the longest distance you'll be able to shoot. He just brought his over, so I could see it.
