My First AR Build

Hey guys, here is some backstory on my first AR-15 Build. I bought it from a company that is local to me called Ormond Arms, which I am pretty sure has been in business for about a year. Anyway, I got an AR-15 rifle kit from them with an 80 percenter in a tungsten finish. They have an easy jig but they recommended to me the 5D Tactical jig, which I opted for due to its good reviews.

My first experience machining an AR-15 was great, and it put a lot into perspective for me in terms of how firearms work. I am still pretty new to it all, and I would say I have read more than I have applied. Getting the chance to apply what I have learned was the best part of the experience for me. I equipped my build with a vortex scope which has made my experience with the gun a hell of ride. I haven't yet had the chance to experiment with longer distances though, but I plan to in the near future.

My friend hates cleaning his gun, but I love to clean mine. I use Remington oil to clean it and a .223/5.56 cleaning kit. I will say that the times I have shot with steel cased ammo hasnt been the best in terms of cleaning, just because of the magnitude of carbon build up I get from it. I prefer brass casings.

I plan on tricking out my build a lot more, but simplicity is key. So I won't add too much more than a vertical fore grip, a better charging handle, and some irons.

What are some cool things you experienced with your first builds?

With these AR rifles it's hard to say they are ever finished because there are so many available options and they are so easy to incorporate. Money is about the only limiting factor it seems.

My first build was a gift for my nephew. Going to the range with him and seeing him shooting it was a fine experience.

I built quite a few. I would just say watch out and keep an eye on those Jesus springs. That's the little spring that you are trying to install and shoots across the room. That is about the time I say Jesus ………. where did that spring go!

Then you end up doing the "armorer's crawl" lol when you gotta go look for that spring or detent. :D:confused:

I'm too dang old to do the armorer's crawl. I keep what I call an "Oop's kit" for when a detent or spring takes on a life of it's own and decides to make a break for freedom. I keep several of those kits on hand, just in case.

Hey girls and boys, a handy solution for finding and retrieving those launched or dropped springs and pins is an old speaker suspended from a short length of twine. This is especially useful if you have carpet where those things get nestled in the fibers slightly where they are very difficult to see.

My first lesson was that AR tools are super useful, and a cheap one works great once or twice.

Lol — I just buy lots of spares for lots of things and keep my blood pressure low.

I got into builds when I started shooting suppressed and needed to build a braced pistol vice SBR. 10.5 or 11.5 inch upper with suppressor is kinda close to standard M4 and not unweildly.

The cool thing I noticed is it’s addictive and you learn a lot.
