Hey Guys,

My Father gave me a Savage Model 99E about 10 years back with factory mounted Weaver mounts. They are a 2 piece set and the base is attached to the ring with a hinge. This allows you to lean the scope over to the left when cleaning I guess. Here is the problem though. I want to put a 3-9X40mm scope on it and the rings are low. (they fit his old 32mm scope. Keep in mind that because of the design of the rifle...the rear Base is taller that the front Base. The rings will be the same height. (medium for a 40mm scope).

Question: Does anybody have modern mounts/bases on a 99E? And what are they?

Ok...for NON 99E owners...I've looked...Burris has the 1pcs SU99R base and Weaver has the 2 pcs Rear #14 and Front #19. I've looked it up.

But the pictures don't show the rear base/mount being taller. I'm looking for someone with a Savage 99E to tell me what they actually have on their rifle that works. Anybody?

Bushpilot, I have a scope mounted on a '99 but I don't know or care what it is exactly. It was made in 1917 and is a Plain Jane '99 that was originally a 303 Savage carbine. It now wears a .22-30/30 Ackley barrel and the bases I used are Weaver # 14 & 19. These bases are not the same "thickness" because when properly installed it is necessary for the rear base to be "thicker" than the front in order for the tops to be in alignment just like the '98 Mauser. If this is the type action you are talking about then this is the way to go. A word of caution. If you have to drill and tap the receiver it will probably be necessary to shorten the rear base screws in order to clear the breech block on the inside when operating the rifle. Also the top of the receiver is very thin where the rear base is mounted and you probably won't have but but three or four threads holding the base. The setup you have now is to "pivot" the scope so the iron sights can be used. The scope can't be in the way for cleaning a Savage '99 bl. since it has to be cleaned from the muzzle. With the #14 & 19 bases you can use any heigth rings necessary to suit you or accomodate any scope bell. I might also mention the rear base is tapered front to back because it is mounted on the slope of the action. Installing these bases is no big deal. Good luck.
