And it was not pronounce as we say it today. It was pronounce on the lines of "Gar" as in fair with a "G" and end "Gair-end"
He quit trying to tell Americans how it was pronounced and let it be as we say it today. Rick B

  6. Dana--

NO--just because he was born in Canada does not make him a British citizen. Mr Garand, gentleman ,died a resident alien.

  7. Itcboy,
Mr. Garand was an American citizen. In Vol 1 of The Garand Papers from 1920 to 1937 I have a copy of all his Citizenship Papers. These make him an American.
    I hope this data helps.
    Thanks again

  8. Was he acitizen when he invented the Garand?

  9. Itcboy,
It was very early, Feb 21, 1921. Mr Garand already had built at the Armory a 20 round removeable mag. Ordnance didn't think troops would need that much firepower. Until 1946 when Ordnance ask him to built a rifle that could use a mag. Here pulled out the 1920 drawing and thus the M14 was born. It was the son of the Garand.
    I hope this data helps.
    Thanks again
