My June 1943 SA Garand is functioning perfectly but I'm getting some gas blow-by inside the front handguard and the barrel channel in the stock. Is this normal? Should I leave it alone as long as it functions properly, or should I look at getting a new op rod-or maybe an new gas cylinder?

Completely normal. As long as the rifle functions properly, shoot 'er and have a good time!

I can't remember running across a M1 that didn't have a carbon buildup inside the hand guard.
