Poll: Treating Myself for the First Time

1186 Views 41 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  GoodNeighborSam
Morning everyone!

We managed to pull off an incredible feat at work that even the seasoned employees are calling extraordinary and are still in disbelief that we manged to submit everything on time. With the long weeks, nights and weekends, and still catching up on sleep deprivation, I obviously need to, as our CEO told us, "indulge in some self care", and what says self care better than a few new firearms in the house! I had been thinking on treat myself to one for each state we worked on covering, but I am not sure if that works because each time I research one, I end up looking at three others. In the poll the first few items were at the top of my list to start with; M1 Garand from CMP, K31 Swiss from Edelweiss, A Polish Tokarev (local), Russian SKS (really not interested in a rifle "made in china"), then the CZ-82 and Nagant revolver entered the chat. I have the poll open for votes, and preferably I would like opinions/experiences from this list.

The others, some are grails (SVT-40) or ones I will get down the road, East German Makarov, Hex reveiver 91/30, and the Swedish 42. For those that collect Enfields, do we ever get in models made in Australia by Lithgow?

If it was me, I would vote for the M1 Garand.
Parts are still available, clips, ammo, etc. Prices are going up (so is everything) but still affordable through the CMP.

Pistol wise, Nagant revolver has always been a keen interest of mine. Fortunately, ammunition has been more available in recent years then when they first came out.
Lots of history on them, very unique mechanism.

Best of luck on what ever you end up getting. There are no wrong picks in your selections.

Thanks, they're going to have to be tabled for a while. Despite all the hard work, I was just let go.

Hey everyone, just wanted to post a quick update here. First, thank you all for the support as I have been furloughed. I've been riding the roller coaster of emotions; numb, angry, depressed. It's only been two weeks, so still going through the thick of it. This morning though, I said **** it and placed two orders; I have a CZ-82 coming my well as well as a Circle 11 Tokarev! I might nab a hex receiver mosin nagant, but I'm going to let that one wait a few weeks so I don't feel like I'm blasting through my finances, though I saved up quite a bit, just the first time really having money in the account and I feel the need to be more frugal now than when I was nursing $200 per month for a while.

I have been very happy with my CZ-82. It fits my hand well, is well-made and accurate. I hope the added-on safety on your Tokarev is better than the one on my Chinese T54. I ended up removing it entirely. Other than that, the Tokarev is a nice piece. Congrats!

Thanks Tom! I ordered the CZ-82 from JG Sales for what seemed to be reasonable for the better condition. I don't think I've picked up a CZ pistol that wasn't comfortable, looking forward to it!

The Polish safety seems to be preferred to the frame safety on the Chinese models and Romanian where it's by the triggerguard and looks really ergonomic!

I will definitely post photos when they arrive, might have a few questions if I encounter cosmoline. Pretty fun just shopping for them, think I found a good path to get into collecting C&R/surplus, and have a few ideas what to get next, once I have something in the form of a paycheck coming back in and can feel a little better off collecting a few more (Early July).

That Swedish pistol is so cool! Never seen it before. I've been diving down the rabbit hole, and just about all of those are on my list so far! I think I'm going to spring for a mosin nagant next (found some fin captures with hex receivers and Ukrainian refurb), a Tula SKS, nagant revolver if they ever show up again, and then start working on bolt actions and semi auto/classic battle rifles. The French rifles appear to be a tremendous value right now, and I've noticed that Enfields are in stock (just doubt I'll ever find one made in Australia). I've read about the Swedish m42 which then went to the Egyptian rifles! This is going to be so much fun collecting. I guess with firearms like these it comes down to just checking the market to see what's available and being willing to spend the extra on anything that's a "grail" since they're not being made anymore!

Polish Tokarev will be here tomorrow, and I have confirmation that J&G has all my information needed for the CZ-82! To quote Hikock45, Life is good. Question on these though, is steel case ammo alright to put through them, or stay with brass? With reloading, I'm thinking I just might feed brass.

Might try a Spanish made Star BM 9x19.
Its only a 8 shot.

When on a range outing my adult offspring all love shooting the old BM, esp the gals.

I love the CZ 82s. I bought several when they were under $200. they are my favorite carry pistol. (IWB) they are natural pointers, very accurate and pleasant to shoot. the steel cased ammo works just fine in them as thats what they were designed for. brass cases also work great. because the brass is so hard to find and expensive, I've started trimming down 9mm Luger brass and it works great although it can cause some mix ups when sorting out fired range brass. my favorite load is 4 gr. of Bullseye under the 95 gr. XTP bullet. it chronos 1077fps W/244 ft. lbs. energy out of the CZ and 981 fps W/ 203 fpe out of the P-64's shorter barrel. the 95 plated bullets fly about 100 fps Faster! I love CZ guns in general, they just feel so tailored to the hand! Good to know about the steel case ammo, I've never used it before and figured it was always suited more for 7.62x39 and 7.62x54R rifles than pistols, guess handguns take a bit of a back seat in my mind when it comes to the cold war. Thanks for the reloading information! I've been looking at the XTP, especially if it makes it into my CCW rotation, and we love Alliant powders (and IMR) around here!

Just got the update from J&G sales, and now I know why it's taken so long to wait for a tracking number; they already sold the CZ-82 that was in good shape and didn't update inventory before I ordered, so now it's only the Tokarev that'll be here today. Don't like any other 82's on the market as the finish appears to be beaten up on all of them. First experience with J&G, what a bunch of imbeciles.

Have you checked AIM Surplus? I have purchased several guns through them with no complaints.

J&G is a very busy place, I experenced the same thing you did.
Its best to call them direct.
Thats how the internet sales have items sold out from under you.
The quick cat gets the mouse.
For J&G call and talk to a sales person for better results.
J&G in-demand items go fast so fast its a real circus
I had about a 1/6 success with J&G.
Royal Tiger Imports have some ruff items but they do have inventory, be sure to pay for hand select.

There are a couple other importers to try.
