Poll: Treating Myself for the First Time

935 Views 39 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  GoodNeighborSam
Morning everyone!

We managed to pull off an incredible feat at work that even the seasoned employees are calling extraordinary and are still in disbelief that we manged to submit everything on time. With the long weeks, nights and weekends, and still catching up on sleep deprivation, I obviously need to, as our CEO told us, "indulge in some self care", and what says self care better than a few new firearms in the house! I had been thinking on treat myself to one for each state we worked on covering, but I am not sure if that works because each time I research one, I end up looking at three others. In the poll the first few items were at the top of my list to start with; M1 Garand from CMP, K31 Swiss from Edelweiss, A Polish Tokarev (local), Russian SKS (really not interested in a rifle "made in china"), then the CZ-82 and Nagant revolver entered the chat. I have the poll open for votes, and preferably I would like opinions/experiences from this list.

The others, some are grails (SVT-40) or ones I will get down the road, East German Makarov, Hex reveiver 91/30, and the Swedish 42. For those that collect Enfields, do we ever get in models made in Australia by Lithgow?

Have you checked AIM Surplus? I have purchased several guns through them with no complaints.
Oh, a long time ago LOL

J&G is a very busy place, I experenced the same thing you did.
Its best to call them direct.
Thats how the internet sales have items sold out from under you.
The quick cat gets the mouse.
For J&G call and talk to a sales person for better results.
J&G in-demand items go fast so fast its a real circus
I had about a 1/6 success with J&G.
Royal Tiger Imports have some ruff items but they do have inventory, be sure to pay for hand select.

There are a couple other importers to try.
Century
AIM
Another I disrememver at the moment.
.
Wow, that has me concerned on one of their current hex mosins

Centerfire Systems C&R

On a afterthought, J&G has like 5 sales people all going at same time, its easy to have 3 sales clerks simutaniously sell the same item at same time.

OMG, I know that name! Man, that skipped over my head too. I'll check them out, used to love their website. I did send J&G a response though, since all sales are apparently "final", I'm not going to take a loss, but if I'm limited to credit, want them to sell me one of those Mosins for the credit, and not a cent more. Think it's a fair offer, and a good faith deal after a bad first experience with them. Oh, damn, should have specified, same price including tax and shipping.

That Swedish pistol is so cool! Never seen it before. I've been diving down the rabbit hole, and just about all of those are on my list so far! I think I'm going to spring for a mosin nagant next (found some fin captures with hex receivers and Ukrainian refurb), a Tula SKS, nagant revolver if they ever show up again, and then start working on bolt actions and semi auto/classic battle rifles. The French rifles appear to be a tremendous value right now, and I've noticed that Enfields are in stock (just doubt I'll ever find one made in Australia). I've read about the Swedish m42 which then went to the Egyptian rifles! This is going to be so much fun collecting. I guess with firearms like these it comes down to just checking the market to see what's available and being willing to spend the extra on anything that's a "grail" since they're not being made anymore!
Sam, if you get the French Mas and need magazines and ammo let me know. I havesome NOS for them.

Did the first field strip yesterday, wow, cosmoline! It was smooth to start with, now its buttery. Quick question though, and I think this might be with the magazine. Every now and then when I go to rack the slide and dry fire, the trigger and hammer will lock up like the safety is on, when it's off. Any ideas what might cause this? Actually, might just need some dry firing practice, probably got some Hoppes oil where it needs to work out, it's getting better. Also, readjusted the recoil spring. Some 3 in one in the hammer assembly, we're doing good!

That looks great! I wouldn’t mind picking one of those up. I have a P64 in 9x18 that’s fun to shoot. It’s actually the gun that printed my best ever one handed group.

Anyways, I’m jealous of the new toys! Good for you.

Thanks Joe! Both of these just feel so great, and I'm glad I bought them. Promised to treat myself, and after being let go, figured I had more than earned them. Have some ammo from Grafs coming tomorrow and I'll be taking them out this weekend, along with the PPK I bought in February!

Ah, and I sat down for some reading this morning, let me just say that this is becoming addictive. I have a third member that will be joining the party in a week or so. More expensive that what it used to be back when I was in high-school and was too young to buy anything, yeah. They making them anymore? Nope. Only going to cost more in the future? Duh. Will I be getting a check from either a new job OR unemployment in a month and a half to replenish? Yep, therefore, order sent!

Not exactly rare, nor excessivly priced.
The rimfires below are a good option, after all if you own a milsurp, Youd love to shoot it, what better budget friendly cartridge than the .22 rimfire.

Romanian Trainer Model 1969

They are around if you take your time and save up for the price.

Found a Canadian model 10 Ross (sporterized) in .303 ($300)

Stock and rear sight work might get it back to looking like WW-1
They had sporterized mauser 71/84, British Snyder, Enfields and Martini's.

I would never trust a Ross rifle. Too many guys hurt by bolts that would often eject during firing.
Expect some photos within the next 36 hours, waiting on FedEx!

Well, this appears to have a very interesting history, being made at the Izhvesk plant in 1930, captured by Finland, and refinished in Ukraine and matching parts. Lots of other proof marks on the stock, and the receiver and barrel shank; blackpowder test, point of aim (k in circle), accuracy (o in circle), a few C's, and a 41 on it. I'll try and add some photos on the mosin nagant subforum in about a week (want to get the cleaning tool for disassembly). Has anyone used mineral spirits to remove cosmoline (would pledge also work?) and would a soaking of Hoppes #9 in the barrel be a good idea? rifling looks sharp! Going to be fun to take apart, that rear band though, that's on there good
