Ed,

I'll post here since this thread dropped off the CSP forum. I read this last night (while on the crapper...I believe that's a great time to self educate!) To expound on the steel shortage, the procurement board CANCELLED SA's steel order and production of new receivers stopped dead in its tracks. Were it not for reserve receivers production of new rifles would have had to stop completely until the error was corrected and the priority for SA's steel restored.

Steve,
I have a ton of data on the steel problems and what the Gov't did with the procurement board. You must remember this would have taken out ALL Garands even one's that had been built. If you want me to post the answer guys just ask and I will end this quiz.
I hope this data helps.
Thanks again

Heck I didnt know Clinton was alive then ? hehehehehehe actually I am ready for the answer I cant think of it for my life. Rick B
I read Duff's book and I believe it was problems with the recievers cracking due to the steel that they were using. This happened on about three differant occasions, but was fixed with correcting the heat treating process.
ONE LAST SHOT

CAN'T SEE THAT IT WOULD PUT THE M1 OUT BUT BROKEN FIRING PINS WERE CAUSING SLAM FIRE AND OUT OF BATTERY. THEY JUST REDESIGNED THE FIRING PINS.

Ed,

This is a some-what WAG. By any chance would the military have been considering a caliber change again? The .276 had been already ruled out, but I could imagine if it, or any caliber other than .30-06 were used, that it would definitely stop Garands from being used.

it has to be the op-rod,I had 2 Garands and both came off the receiver,I greased them good and used mil ammo, what I could see was the the op-rod had soft metal where it goes onto receiver, had one come so far back that it hit my hand, and when the germans made the assault rifle that must have scared the poop out U.S. troops,AKs all the way!!!:assult:
Ok guys the answer to the quiz in one word is "RAIN". It seems that in testing the M1 Garand in a light rain, it was found that the M1's were jamming up after 3 or 4 clips. Ordnance did testing and found that the rain washed away the oil in the area of the op-rod and bolt rails. Now Ordance had a real problem with this. The more they tested the more Garands jammed. Instead of Ordnance going to Mr. Garand, they went off and came up with a plan: drill a hole where the bolt and op-rod meet, put in a felt cut- out, give the G.I. a can of 3-and-1-oil and the problem was fixed. They showed their masterpiece to Mr. Garand and after he looked it over he turned to them and said, "WHY NOT USE GREASE?" DUH! Ordnance had spent 100,000 dollars on this project and walked away with their heads down.
I hope this data helps.

What about Col. McFarlands dilema with the colostomy incident??
Itcboy,
The funny thing about that is somewhere around here I show him as a Brigadier General in the late 1930's and because of what happened he was Acting Chief of Ordnance at the time. I quess they just wanted to make him feel better.
Thanks again
Clancy
I stand corrected Mr. Clancy.
