Any damage to the case rim is usually done on extraction, not insertion. Often a weak extractor plunger spring or dirty chamber can be blamed.
Be glad you can get 2 reloads out of brass. The M1 wasn't designed with reloading in mind. No thought was given to the condition of the brass; only to getting the new in and the old out in the most efficient and reliable manner possible. The brass gets beaten at every turn from the "case positioner" to the oprod.
