Well, wife and I went shooting with captsquirrel and Palladin8 last Saturday. Fun was had by all, but we finally noticed something about her pistol.

She still has a slight tendency to shoot a bit low, but after some more careful checking, it seems her factory white-dot sights do skew a bit low at around 21-30 feet. They're not adjustable, so we need a new rear sight.

First, the rear sight is strange. Anyone know the appropriate tool to get it off? it sort of looks like a tiny allen wrench will do, but I'm a bit unsure. Next, recommend a good adjustable rear white-dot sight...or heck, front too, that's much easier to get off.

Millet makes good stuff, Coel. I would seriously look at those. Also ask Seabeescotty what he thinks. What good is it having a gunsmith here if you can't free advice from him?

Be careful when you remove the rear sight. There is a part with a spring on it under the sight. I drilled a small hole in the front sight and filled it with silver solder. Makes it show up good. Could fill it with gold if you had it.
Details about this spring? We've misplaced the manual for the P90. I was just going to look at the exploded view to get a better idea of it, but now I'll have to go online, I think.

KP90DC is talking about the firing pin block spring which is located under the rear sight on Ruger auto pistols. The spring is under tension from the rear sight and is pushing down a plunger that blocks the firing pin until the trigger is pulled. When you remove the rear sight you need to make sure that you dont send that little spring flying across the room. When you begin to drift the sight back on you will need to depress the little spring with something until you slide the sight back over it. This is where my hand has slipped and I have had to spend a lot of time crawling on the floor trying to find that little spring that makes my gun go bang.

Ah-ha. I didn't know the rear sight kept it in there. No problem then. But still, what do I use to get it off? Is that hole for an allen wrench? I haven't tried yet because we don't have any replacement sights and I'd rather not fiddle with it until we do.

Something else funny, too. Since she's left handed, I tried to turn the mag release button spring around, only to find that there's a tiny hole drilled for the end of the spring to go into on the right side of the frame (making the mag release button stick out to the left) but no hole on the left.

Is that normal? If we can find some jeweller's tools to borrow she can easily drill a 1-2 mm hole in the other side to allow the switch (she's done jewellry work before), but I thought most Rugers in the P-series were designed to allow the mag release to be switched around already.

The rear sight is held in place by a set screw, you remove the screw with an allen wrench and than drift the sight out of the dovetail with a plastic puch or wooden dowel and gunsmiths hammer or plastic/rubber mallet. Depending on how long the sight has been on there and / if lock tight was used after it was originally sighted in, it can be much more dificult to remove than it sounds. Having a vise with plastic soft jaws to hold the slide while you work the sight out will help a lot.

Im not sure about the mag release spring, I will have to take apart a P90 later and see if it has the hole on both sides.

Ok, my P90 has the hole for the mag latch spring only on the right side as well. The specs for the P90 state that the magazine release is reversable , but I had never tried it cause I am right handed. The other pistols in the P -series that have double stack mags have a ambi-safety design that does not work with the single stack .45 magazine well of the P90.

So I pulled the mag catch spring and mag release and tried to swap it to left hand function out of curiosity and there does not seem to be a way to make it work without one end of the spring set into the frame like it is on the right side.

While re-installing it on the right side I broke that little spring , I must have mangled it a little to much playing with it. - Doh !

Be carefull its a fragil little spring. I will make a new one at work tommrow if I get the time, or maybe I will just caugh up the $3.50 and order one from Brownells.

Doh !

I had a few fine tools to draw it out with, but I also could not make it set in there. The kink at the end presses on the frame and exerts force perpendicular to the direction the release button slides.

I read the specs too, which is why I bothered trying it. Maybe we'll just look into selling it and buying her one of the later P-series models. I'll chat it up with her.

She copes by using her index finger on the release anyway, but we still need to replace the sights.

I just removed the rear sight of my Ruger p90 from right to left. I placed the slide inside sandwich before I completely removed the sight, So I wouldn't lost the small spring holding plunger.
