I notice like on my Mossberg 590 the magazine tube is 3-3.5 inches shorter than the barrel.

What is the official length without getting into Short Barrel Shotgun or Any Other Weapon?

What's the best way to measure as well?

The standard of shotguns is 18.5 inches.

Giving yourself the extra .5 inch can save you from visiting the federal pen!

Rifles must have 16 inch barrels, shotguns the shortest barrel you can have without the tax stamp is 18 inches, 18.5 is a lot more common though. If ya wanna spend the $200 for the stamp though and jump thru hoops you can have a scattergun with a 14 inch barrel, but I think you'll get more use out of the 18.5......

close the bolt/action and stick a dowel or other stick down the barrel. Measure it from where it stopped after pulling it out
