Ok got a indrustry publication (I work in security as my main job) stateing that in the US there are 1.5 Million security guards employeed at this time (Amazing its such an even # but you know the press). Now I don't know the # of active Army people, I do know that the Marine Corps only has aound 200,000. Lets ASSUME the Army is 1 million. That MEans that this country has more privet security guards than Armed forces..ground based (No Slight on the NAvy and Air Force Just talking ground type oriented people and this is just a generalzation). No for all of you that think NATO is going to take over.....Guess how many of the top 4 security companies are soly USA companies...NONE! Argenbright (The Airrline security people) are owned bySecure Corp (British) Securata is multay national as are others.....
    Just thought this was intresting......

  2. I know what you mean Doglips,
I worked in the security buz for awhile and I can't think of any that are large enough to count that are owned by US firms. BURNS is from last report the largest (employee wise) in the world
    who owns them you ask?
    its a british company.
this report is kinda scued though, I think they are counting security license arn't they not accutal employed gaurds right?
If not there are alot more than I thought.

Not sure..some sttes dont require lic. So may be an employeed estameet. Couse in FL. We get snow birds that only work 6months but keep their lic all year. Also in FL. In house (like colledges that have their own security people) dont need a lic. Just hit me as funny that we have more guards than armed forces...kinda scary when I think of some of our employees. Granted its not like they could over throw a 7-11 because 99.9% would not go along...

  4. Wakenhut is a company owned by stockholders but run by US personnel.

The company is beginning to get rather large in the SW and on the west coast.

From what I have heard and read the founding father(s) of Wakenhut were retired federal prison executives. I know they are geared towards private prisons but do also have several regular security departments operational.

  5. I don't remember the number of military personnel now because of all of the draw down activities that the military has had. If the numbers that are estimated are active only then you would have to include reserves (active and inactive), national guard, etc. which would make the numbers much higher.

i would guess the number of active duty army to be around half a million or less. about an equal number of reservists.

I know Pinkerton bought out Burns, but they are both owned by a British holding company. I do armed security for NCR, and have to escort the technicians on ATM repair runs. In Ohio, the lawmakers are trying to pass a law that states a person cannot work one day until their background check is completed, the person gets their green card from the state, and they take a mandatory 40-hour course on laws governing private security. It will weed out the undesireables, but it's gonna cause a lot of problems for companies because they won't be able to fill up vacancies as quickly. Average time to receive your green card here is 5 months, and it's 6 if you're armed.

In Fl. You take a 24 hr course (unarmed) and 24 more hours (Armed). The state runs a criminal check on you but you get a temp lic so you can work for the 2-3 months it takes. Some companies Like Burns/Pinkerton run a back ground check on you as well before you start work. Some do not.
