With a lot of work, I was able to hit a 10" gong at 300 meters with mine but it was scoped.
I would put practical accuracy at 200-250 yds with ammo your gun likes.

Thanks Toolman. I hit a metal plate at 200 yards two time in a row without allowing for trajectory. I quit while I was ahead.

I agree 200-250 yards. Sometimes I think we think of that distance isn't very far. But you need good eyes to see a target at the range. If I'm shooting for distance I like my M39 Mosin.

The 7.62X39 cartridge was designed for close combat. AK-- 300 meters or less.

Umm..have any of you guys ever used the iron sights past 300?

The SKS is by far the most accurate rifle I own (and haven't modified or scoped out) and is capable with iron sights of nailing within 1' and less targets at over 500..
The iron sights are right on the money..

IMHO, and since I can't shoot for a while..I don't know how much stock you want to put into that..lol
