Hello everyone,

Went shooting this weekend and one of the guys I went with let me shoot his SKS. I fell in love with it. :p

Anyways, he bought his several years ago here in California. I guess it's CA legal because it has the fixed magazine box and no grenade launcher mount thingie.

So now I want one of these things but I don't know where might be a good place to look. I still haven't finished up my C&R application, I was thinking about doing that and ordering one off line. Can I even order one of those, assuming it is CA legal? Any thoughts and opinions are appreciated. Thanks,

Russ

Sadly, the C&R Yugoslavian SKS has the grenade launcher which is illegal in CA even though it's legal under fed law as a C&R. Several vendors have a modified version that replaces the grenade launcher with a muzzle brake. This unfortunately kills its C&R status.

But you can get a CA legal version through the regular channels.

Or you can still find the M59 Yugo that never had the G/L. It's very similar to the standard Russian/Romanian model. A little more expensive, as fewer were imported.

Other than the Russian SKS which was manufactured prior to 1955, no other SKS is C&R eligible in California. The M59 in its original configuration (and 59/66 with the grenade launcher removed) are CA legal but not C&R...they must go thru a 01 FFL. I did call the CA DOJ to ascertain the C&R status of the Russian but this is not legal advice, usual disclaimer, yada yada :)
