I acquired a Springfield Model 1884 last week. It's a bit rough, but for the age I can't complain. Plus it has a South Carolina stamp on the butt plate, so I couldn't let anyone else buy it. Mechanically, it's it good condition and I look forward shooting the old lady. The issue I have is I need another stock first. The original has several cracks and I do not feel comfortable firing the rifle in that stock. I've been looking around for a better condition stock, but pretty much all the original stocks have almost identical cracks to what mine has. Were they just not sturdy enough to hold up to lo g time use or something? The only stock I've run across is going to run me about $250 if I I buy it. Does anyone know where I can find a stock for less than that? I don't care if it's new, or modified, or anything. I only need something solid so I can put some lead downrange.
