I have a matching Winchester carbine with perfect markings on the stock , but someone refinished it with a hideous coat or two of varnish . How do I remove the varnish without damage to the cartuches or the wood it self ??

Rick may have other suggestions, but I used "Stain and Varnish Remover" which is like paint remover. Took two applications but did a good job on an M1 handguard.

As VVG said a stripper is good. I use Bix in teh red and white can which is user freindly. The method is the trick as to coat it and wipe it off then recoat and wipe off again. Now maybe rinse it lightly with a tooth brush and see how much is left if any. Rubber gloves should be used of course. Its hard to say as I have had stocks that one coat and they were clean and I have had them need 4 strippings and still holding on to some of the finish. Just try and be careful around the cartouches.
