I'm looking for a lever action bear defense gun for backpacking in grizzly country (Alaska, wyoming, etc). I think i've narrowed it down to the marlin or w 94 in .444. However it seems winchester dropped the Big Bore model from their catalog. I was wondering if maybe the 94 can't handle the .444 because I hear good things about the other calibres. Any input? The marlin guys are getting pretty convincing! Thanks.

Would defintely consider the Marlin guide gun in .444 or .45-70. Looks small enough to not be a bother backpacking. Both cartridges should be okay for bear. You might consider a "mountain rifle" in a stouter caliber, .300 Win. Short Mag., .35 Whelen, or such.

winchester only made the 94 in .444 for one year. they are pretty hard to find. i've been looking.

Anyone know why they only did one year? Problems? Live2hunt, if you want one my local shop lists one available on their web site www.parros.com. I still haven't decided, so go for it! -Peter
