What are your tranportation plans?

depends largely on the situation.

how much time has passed since whatever event happened.

emp? no cars pumps etc..

so many variables.

travelling will likely be dangerous even if possible.

IF alot of the population is killed, but its not an emp, there will be plenty of cars and gas to use, at least for a while.

if most of the population is still alive after said event, the available gas will be used in a matter of days.

its a very good idea to hae alternate means of transportation. bicycles are nice to have, motorcycles as well( a 5 gallon gas can can go along way in a motorcycle).

problem with motorcycles is they are generally quite loud and will draw attention and offer zero protection, not that cars are much better.

Staying put - close to all my gear, propane, gasoline, and tools. If electric goes out, will make jerky with meats, dry veggies, to preserve them. I have my LPCs (leather personnel carriers -Shoes) for transportation but don't plan to travel anywhere for a while. Buy the book Back To Eden or equivalent to know which plants will offer medicinal properties.

Mexican Oil - Aceite Mexicano I was given this stuff as a kid when I had an upset stomach - I know it works.

You might have heard of it (I grew up in Santa Fe), I recall you mentioned you lived near San Antonio, NM, don't know if you still do. Read about the items and let us know your thoughts. Talk to some of the older locals and you will get a wealth of knowledge.

I've ridden motorcycles for the last 45 years, but as I've gotten older, I started riding less and less about 5 years ago. Thats when I sold both of my big bikes and purchased this smaller lighter, more agile Kawasaki VX-300, basically just to keep my motorcycling skills sharp, and as an occasional weekend ride, and for freshwater fishing trips into the Florida backcountry. It has a 4.5 gallon fuel tank and gets 70 mpg. I've started riding it more and more often recently instead of taking my gas guzzling 4x4 GMC Sierra pickup that only gets 13 mpg. I also have an older Jeep Wrangler, but its gas mileage is pretty pathetic also. So now if I have to go somewhere by myself, I take the Kawasaki, weather permitting. As part of my preps, we keep about 50 gallons of fuel for the emergency generator for hurricane season, that would keep this little bike running for a long time.

I'm going to shelter in place down the road in a school. I saw them build it and it has thicker walls of concrete and brick and built better than the wood framed house I'm in now. We went in when they had open house and there's a basement that has emergency food, water and other equipment if needed. The kitchen was fairly well stocked with canned goods, dry goods and a freezer with generator backup. I think it'll depend on who gets there first to claim the stuff. I don't want to get caught out on the open roads if possible. I'm sure people will prey on each other and whittle down the competition at first.

Just remember, a school is a POI known to have medical supplies and shelf stable food, so anyone that passes it will want to visit too, and schools have a lot of windows and entrances.

I always joked that in the event of a zombie apocalypse, Cracker Barrel was the ultimate spot. There's melee weapons on the walls, farming implements to build a garden on the flat roof, a fireplace, blankets, warm clothing, food, shutters that can be repositioned over the windows (or actual, working hurricane shutters in Florida), there are only two easily secured entrances (three for some of the older ones with freezer access from the outside) and they are usually close to truck stops and hotels for convenient scavenging. The problem is that it, too, is a POI on a main path.

It would be a slog, but I plan on going to the family farm on Lookout Mountain and setting up camp over the hill. It isn't an obvious spot, there's spring water, farmable land, the neighbors have cattle, foraging for greens and fruit is good, and there is plenty of lumber to build a palisade for defense.
