[Stock Doc]

I have had two for sale for a month with cartouched stocks and all parts correct except the barrels and asking less than the show prices. They are not selling unless you have a specific buyer that is not a memebr of CMP. They have been at a gun shop getting full exposure everyday. The owner said everyone looks them over and ooooo and aahhhs but wont buy them. The market is shot on them in most places. I have had a few ask if they could by my rifles when I go to sell but they want to pay CMP price for them. I put $200.00 stocks on them and paid for parts to get them correct for there time period. There not CMP rifles off the rack mixed up. Some people will buy a junker and spend $600.00 on Ebay gettting parts so I dont get it.. Rick B

Too many choices, thats for sure. I've got a Dane/VAR and a mid # '03 "C" on order. Keep in mind the supply can't be endless. Its sort of like the stock market - lets just hope its not like Enron! Its possible your average shooter might not know about CMP, but your collector, and avid shooter will. The only advantage I see about seeing M1's at a show is at least you know what your getting, and can pick and choose. I see a lot of small time reselling going on, especially here on the internet. A sign of the times. Seems the gun community is as strong as ever though, which is good!

legislation and CMP setting price

When a major source raises or lowers the price, the market follows. In example, last year H&R garands were selling for about 700 to 800 bucks at shows and internet. Now that you can specificaly order them, for 550 (shipping included) they will drop to 600 to 700.

Hey Guys--

I know that this is an old post, but after reading all of these threads in this one, is it worth all of the trouble, time, waiting, and maybe some possible disapointment to get a Garand thru CMP? It just seems to me that there are other sources out there that one can persue to achieve this. Bear with these questions, Im new. It just seems as a newbie the CMP system is somewhat frustrating for an individual to go thru. If I am mistaken please correct me. I got my Garand from Tony Giacobbe. He has excellant rack grade models for $550. Why not go to a guy like him and get the rifle in four days as oppossed to 6weeks to 2 months for a rifle that maybe substandard?

At that price no reason to go to the CMP but allot of folks say they are spending $800.00 when they could get one for almost half that. Once you are a member you can buy any time you feel the urge also. All of my CMP Garands were excellent. The 03's now that isa differnt story. Rick B

Anytime you buy something sight unseen, you take a risk. The trade off for that risk is lower prices. I think most people buy a Garand, any Garand, to get started. Then the bug gets 'em and they begin to take interest in serial #'s, stocks, etc. At that point yes, it's probably worth it to spend more for something specific, something you can see first. For the "starter" rifle, I think it's hard to beat the Danish Garands, especially for price. When you read these posts you see very few people not happy with what they receive. Bottom line, the CMP may not be perfect, but its better than the alternative!

WOW, Just opened the CMP box containing my Danish. Stock had the flakey grain which might be replaced at some time, but the find was the TE of 1 and ME of 1.2-1.4 on the gauge. Already in the grease for storage. Date on the rcvr was early 45. Will tear it apart after turkey season for all the numbers.

Got to give credit where it is due, I consider this a bargain and expect it will shoot better than I. - This is why I will, as I have said in the past, continue to support the C. M. P. Not only for the value, but what I hope they will return to the shooting community.

Now the worry is on about the Service grade I will receive,
Hope I get a good metal like above, Heck I can always send the furniture to the Stock Doc...

I have said it before and you have prooven it. The Danish are the best deal going and beat teh pants off many others for a great shooter. Hope you enjoy it. Rick

Im sorry but you guys have to face the music. If you are going to buy a Garand buy it in the best condition you can. I admitt 800 bucks is pricey but if your gonna buy a gun buy a good one.

I have gotten them in the best condidtion available. Original condiition. Why do you beleive paying for a 60 year old rifle in reparked condition is better? Do you marry a woman for the looks only and not the brains? Many cars are sleepers with 671 blowers and nitrus. They'll eat up a $56,000 car. SO again what was you're point about the $800.00 rifle? Also the CMP will take the rifle back if you are picky. Rick B

I think that your still taking a risk with the CMP, at least if you go to somebody private you know what your getting. Stock Doc is the type of guy that enjoys restoring the rifles to like new military issue, I dont have that talent. Therefore I am willing to pay a premium for a rifle that may cost $100 or $200 more than the CMP. What you get is what you pay for. I wouldnt want to attemp to do what Stock Doc does because I know it would look mediochre.

I think you make a good point - everything else being equal, I would rather buy something I can see. HOWEVER - I operate on a very limited budget and the cost of most M1s (especially the ind I like, 1942 and before) are simply beyond my means.

Plus, this is the closest I'll ever come to gambling!

At least you have the CMP to get rifles from. I bet everyone who poo-poos on the CMP for the "low quality" M1's would change their tunes if the CMP never existed. To all you 'collector's' out there expecting to get a 'new from factory' rifles from the CMP, wake up. These are "SERVICE GRADE" meaning they will shoot. No credit on how pretty they are. Now I admit the "Select Grades and the Collector Grades are a bit nebulious, and not worth the extra $$. But these CMP guns are meant to shoot, and to provide the CMP the operating funs to support junior shooting not to pamper to our gun collecting hobby. Think of the rifle purchase as a CMP junior shooter donation with a M1 Garand or M1903/A3 as a door prize that you get to choose.
