Hoping to get my history straight...
Did the M16 come in during Vietnam or was it already adopted when we went over there?

BattleRifle, from what I found, it was adopted in 1967.

The USAF got it first, about '65 or '66 if memory serves. Then the Government inflicted it on the Army in '67. On my Navy frigate in the early eighties, we still had the M14 on board for the security force. That was great duty! We got to do it ourselves, since we didn't carry any Marines.

First tested by the Army in 58. In March 63, XM16E1's were deployed with the 173rd Airborne Division. Some miltary produciton was also diverted to the Far East in 64 for Army, AF, and Navy.
