A Crestliner Vision is your typical modern aluminum trailer boat. I can't stand those cheesy black rubber-looking stock steering wheels in most of these things.

I don't even own a boat yet. I have a hankering for a Crestliner Vision but not any time soon. Most trailer boats seem to be 3/4" shaft. I am a former automobile and fleet truck mechanic by trade and tapered steering column shafts on motor vehicles seemed common if memory serves me correctly. I have replaced car steering wheels before with a common mechanical puller. I have read that there are adapter kits as needed for some boat wheels.

By the way I am an Army Vet too. 63B, light wheeled vehicle mechanic. Motor pool mechanic. The most underappreciated MOS in the Army.

I knew a lot of 63C when I was in. Any unit needs vehicles.
Only tapered shafts I think of are crankshafts on smaller engines. Lawn mowers, outboards, etc. It’s been decades since I pulled a steering wheel on a car, can’t remember the shaft. I keep thinking they were multi splined straight shafts.

I probably should only worry about this should I ever get a boat. I'm sure there are aftermarket wheels (and adapter kits if needed) available to fit virtually any boat one has. Probably not many aluminum boat/runaboyt/dinghy/jet boat/ski boat/jon boat owners opt for custom steering wheels. This seems more common on custom boats, cabin cruisers, yachts and large coatal boats. The stock wheels on smaller aluminum boats generally look cheap like something rubber or plastic on a cheaper riding lawn mower sold at Lowe's. Those boat wheels with chrome rims look nice too and then there's the metal Billet ones.

Here is what the stock wheel looks like on a new Crestliner 1600 Vision, rather complex and ungainly. The gauges have chrome trim so a clean wood wheel with chrome spokes might look cool there. The more slender rim on the wood wheel should make the view of the gauges less obstructed.
