Windchester 1300 vs Mossberg 500

Hi everyone,

I was looking into buying a new multi purpose shotgun along the lines for home defense and just general shooting.

Two shotguns that were brought to my attention were the Windchester 1300 Defender and the Mossberg 500 Persuader. Both in 12 gauge.

Ive gotten my hands on my friends model 1300 but I dont have any expirience with the Mossberg.
Does anyone have any expirience with or own one of these?
Any comments or other recommendations?

both good guns :right: I prefer the Winchester
If you haven't looked at Remington 870s yet, it would be a good idea. If you want the most versatile setup, they're definitely the best choice, where you can get one action and be able to take 3.5" super magnums, use a short 18" barrel for home defense, use a rifled barrel for slugs, and use whatever length of magazine extension you wish. With the Mossberg 500 the mag lengths are set at 5, and with the 590 they only make cylinder barrels for tactical use. The Win 1300 Defender can only take a short smooth barrel or a longer 22" one for competition with chokes.

That said, if rifled barrels are not on the menu, you can get longer sporting barrels for both the 8-shot 500 and the Win 1300 Defender. And on the defender, you MAY be able to use other sporting barrels with a freakish conversion I had in mind... ;)

Winchester 1300 Practical Defender, 22" barrel, Win-chokes

Maverick 88 8-shot (similar to Moss 500, same barrel, different safety) 28" barrel available with Accu-set Choke

Rem 870 Express

Rem 870 Express Super Magnum (would require an aftermarket mag extension if you want one, but will take all 3" 870 barrels)

I have both guns. I like them both.

If I had to choose between them again I would probably do as I originally did. Get the Winchester first, then get the Mossberg later. If money is a concern, the Mossberg is $50.00 cheaper.

My 1300 will hold 8 slug or 00 buck shells in the mag, but for some reason with my Mossberg I can only get 7 00 buck or slug shells in it. Any other shells it holds 8. Another downside for the Mossberg is as soon as I racked the slide the first time the visible wear started to show. I am still cleaning out metal shavings out of the action. But I still like the gun, as a matter of fact it is going camping with me while the Winchester stays at home in the safe.
Allen how old is your Mossberg 500? I bought one about two years ago and I haven't had any problems with shavings. I haven't fired it a whole lot but still don't have any real wear showing.
The Mossberg looks like a gun that should use grease to lubricate it. I'll try it on my 590 and see if it makes it smoother.
thanks for the input guys, for my own needs it looks like im going to get the 1300 defender.

The other options that the mossberg has seem nice but I dont see myself really having that big of a need for them. but who knows, maybe down the road.
I've had a Mossberg 500 for about 15 years now and never had a lick of trouble out of it. Run it with rem-oil in the spring and summer, and powdered graphite in the fall and winter. Bought it as a security combo pack that came with a 28†modified choke and a 18 ½†cylinder bore tube. I’ve used my 500 every year for hunting rabbit, deer and sometimes squirrel. I put the pistol grip on it and put it in the car for road trips. It’s stood behind the door to protect my “castle†many times. Every time I pull the trigger it goes “boom†and kicks me in the shoulder. I’ve never needed another 12 Ga. And that is the highest praise I can give this gun. -UR
Great to see you around, Uncle Red! Glad your M500 is treating you well! I considered getting one as an all around hunting gun (I've had one before and still have a barrel laying around.) Main reason I ruled it out is that all the rifled barrels are ported. I can take recoil, but I really don't like porting.
I had a Winchester 1300 Defender with an 18 1/2 inch barrel. After 7 years with it as my only scattergun,I guess I got bored.About 4 months ago I picked up a Remington 870 magnum,as pictured below by BRG.With extended magazine tube.Great gun.Although, I do feel the urge to get a set of rifle sites put on it.
Dale,
I have only had the shotgun for about 3 months. I did not mean to give anyone the impression that the gun was giving me trouble, I really like the gun.

When I first got the gun, and I racked the slide a few times and then I noticed that the pump rails and the mag where the pump handle was rubbing it was wearing. That night I took the gun apart and cleaned and oiled the gun, but the damage was already done.

I took the gun camping with me over the weekend and put about a hundred rounds though it and no problem. when I cleaned the gun last night I did not find any metal shavings in the action.
I've had my Mossy for almost 8 years now. I have the 18.5 cylinder bore tube on it. I've added a set of ghost ring sights and a sling and havent done anything else to it since. Do want to replace the wood with synthetic though. This shotgun followed me through the military, has had thousands or shells through it, been swimming in both fresh and salt, got dragged through jungle and desert alike, and has yet to have a single jam or misfire, no matter how filthy it got at times. I have friends who prefer the Remington and the Winchester. Cant speak much for the winchester due to limited experience there. The Remingtons i have used were definitely smoother than most mossbergs. But my old Mossy just gets smoother with age and it hasnt failed me yet.

TACAV,

For your purposes, Go with the Mossberg!!!!!! Don't get the Winchester (they're not TACTICAL, and you have to have a tactical gun!). But Instead of The 500 Persuader, Go with the Mossberg 590A1 #51411, It is the exact same as the Persuader, only the reciever, barrel, magazine, and bolt, are parkerized, and the safety, and trigger gaurd are metal. It is the standard Law Enforcement Shotgun that mossberg makes.

Mossberg 590A1 #51411 (the one I'm Planning on getting)

Mossberg 500 Persuader #50411

Also, "Before there was light-kicking "tactical" buckshot, the U.S. Armed Services established Mil-Spec 3443E, a brutal and unforgiving torture test with 3,000 rounds of full power 12 gauge buckshot.
Only one pump action shotgun was heavy duty enough to pass. Mossberg."

"Now, twenty years later, the state-of-the-art Mossberg® 590A1™ reigns as king of heavy-duty police/military slide action shotguns. Engineered to the exacting standards of the National Institute of Justice, this smooth-handling yet ruggedly reliable service weapon offers such important subtleties of design as its ergonomic, ambidextrous top-tang safety and "swab straight though" magazine tube."

P.S. My dad has the Mossberg 590, and I love it, smooth action, light weight, great gun all around.

Does anyone know where I can get a tube extension for a Mossberg 590a1?

Does anyone know how to put a bayonet on a Mossberg 590a1 and/or Mossbery 500?

Thanks!

You can't simply just get one for the Mossberg. The way the barrel screws into the end of the magazine tube, you'd have to buy a new magazine tube and a new barrel. As for a bayonet.... I dunno, why would you need one? Oh, and welcome to the forum.
^Ya should know it's not about "needing" one! It's about wanting it because it's soooo tacticool! LOL

I've shot/owned both and I prefer the mossbergs. I gave my 1300 to my nephew.
my old mossberg 500 with a 28 inch fixed choke and 3 inch chamber has slain many a duck.i did, however, win a 1300 recently on auction arms. it will accompany me to the duck blind this year.i know it's not tactical, but that's real world experience under harsh conditions.nothing is wrong with the mossberg,i just wanted the versatility of interchangeable chokes.i shall see if it's $200 well spent or not.

Not sure what you mean by "Tactical", I have a Winchester M1200 with M4 stock 6 shell holder, heat shield and an 18 in bbl. It works great for close range (duh right?) Med. range and some longer range shots with the right load. I've even used it a few time to blast some clay pigeons ( I was surprised how well that worked ). Just curious since seems like everyone has their own idea of what "tactical" is.
I have a Mossberg 500 and a Winchester 1300 Ranger, which is aimed more at hunting than the Defender. I would go with the Winchester 1300.
